Gunmen kill 29 students, teacher in Yobe

An unspecified number of gunmen attacked and killed 29 students and
one teacher at Government Secondary School at Mamudo, about five
kilometres from Potiskum in Yobe State at about 3.00am today

Survivors are being treated for gunshot wounds and burns at Potiskum
General Hospital. The gunmen are suspected to be members of Boko
Haram.

An English teacher, Mohammed Musa, the victim, was shot in the chest,
according to another teacher Ibrahim Abdu.

Fifteen-year-old Musa Hassan, a student, told newsmen at the hospital:
"We were sleeping when we heard gunshots. When I woke up, someone was
pointing a gun at me."

He put his hands up to cover his face in defence and suffered a
gunshot that blew off all four fingers on his right hand which he uses
to write with.

Hassan said the gunmen came with jerry cans of fuel which they used to
torch the school's administration block and one of the hostels.

"They burned the students alive," he said, the horror showing in his wide eyes.

It is believed that dozens of children from the 1,200-students school
escaped into the bush. Many have not been seen since. Some bodies were
so charred they could not be identified, so many parents do not know
if their children survived the attack.

Yobe was one of the three states, in which Federal Government declared
a state of emergency mid-May. No word yet from the special forces
about the attack.

Rooney is staying at Manchester United, says Moyes

David Moyes has insisted striker Wayne Rooney is not for sale and will
remain a Manchester United player.
The 50-year-old attended his first press conference as Sir Alex
Ferguson's successor at Old Trafford and immediately faced questions
on Rooney's future at the club.
Despite refusing to state whether the player categorically asked to
leave the club, Moyes was adamant that the England international is
not for sale and is working well under his management.
"I'm sure it's a question on your lips and you couldn't wait to get it
out, but the fact of the matter is Wayne's not for sale," Moyes told
reporters.
"He's a Manchester United player and will remain a Manchester United
player. Let's not kid ourselves, he's a terrific player and he won't
be for sale.
"We've spoken several times and I'm saying whatever has happened
before has gone, we're working together now.
"I see a little glint in his eye at the moment. He looks happy, he
looks as if he's saying 'I'm going to knuckle down, I'm going to get
myself right' and I can only say I've been impress with how he's
done."

Conjoined Twins With 1 Liver, 1 kidney & 1 intestine born to Abuja Jobless Couple

The conjoined twins were delivered at about 7 pm on July 2, 2013 at
LUNA Hospital in Gwarinpa, Abuja. The babies are joined from the
stomach and chest down. They have three legs joined together, one
liver, one kidney and one intestine." Ironically, the scan that was
conducted didn't reveal that it was conjoined twins.
The 32-year-old resident of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, who
is from Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, and his
30-year-old wife, are currently at a loss.
He said, "The scan was done but we were not informed that it was
conjoined twins. When we were told that the babies were twins, we were
all happy. For now, my wife is still in the hospital, although not
fully recovered. But she is responding to treatment."

Bassey's hopes were dashed when the management of the National
Hospital told him that they had done their best but there was no hope
that they could do the separation.
He said, "The doctors at the National Hospital said they have tried
their best, including scanning and everything they could do within
their power.
"They said there was nothing else they could do in that unit. But they
told me that if I have anywhere in the world where the babies could be
separated, they would assist and send an e-mail and refer the babies
to that place.
"At what cost? For now, they have not told me but they said they could
not do the separation here and would not know where they could
transfer the babies," Bassey stated.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the National Hospital, Dr. Tayo
Haastrup, said, "The babies were not delivered in the National
Hospital. They were delivered through a Caesarean section in a
hospital somewhere in Gwarinpa; they are fine and their mother is
still in the hospital, where she delivered the children. But the
babies are now in our Special Care Babies Unit."
When asked if any surgery had been done to separate conjoined babies,
Haastrup replied in the negative.
He said, "Surgical operation is not the issue for now; but we have
carried out some tests and other things to find out their state of
health. They are lying now well in SCBU as I am speaking to you."

Glo X Factor judges, M.I Abaga, Onyeka Onwenu and Rockstone at war

The battle for Globacom's N24 million prize money for the winner of X
Factor,  has assumed an interesting dimension with the judges of the
show taking on each other at the Boot Camp.
As the remaining contestants at the camp battle to secure a place in
the Top 9 stage of the contest, the judges are also seeking to out-do
each other to ensure that the candidates they are mentoring do not
only go far in the competition but also end up winning the ultimate
prize.

The contestants are divided among the three judges – Onyeka Onwenu, MI
and Reggie Rockstone, whose duty it is to mentor the singers assigned
to them and help prepare them for the live performances and progress
in the contest. The contestants are grouped into the "Under 23", "Over
23" and "Group singers".
Rockstone, father of hiplife music in Ghana, fired the first salvo.
"This is war. I need the best army to go to this war," he declared.
"People say I am cocky, I'm over-confident or whatever. So I'm going
to stay that way. But tell you something, I don't know what category
or who I am mentoring. But everything I touch, Midas, gold. I am
winning this competition," he boasted in his American accent.
"For me, this is do or die," MI fired back. "It is MI's time now. And
that difference is going to show. I am not looking for great. I am not
looking for average or okay, I am looking for someone with the 'X' and
he is going to come from my camp,"
The Elegant Stallion is not to be outdone either. "I am ready. I do
not take risks. I know about entertainment. Period. I can work with
any of the groups but I think the real challenge for me will be to
work with the 'Under 23' and that is what I will like to do", Onyeka
stated, promising to work hard to ensure that her group produces the
winner of Glo X Factor.

I never had & never will I accept Elshama - Paul Okoye

I reported hours ago that Paul Okoye had accepted the baby of former
beauty queen, Elshama and even used their picture as his display
picture on his blackberry phone.
Well, Paul has reacted to the story - he is saying something different!
According to him, the picture which circulated this morning, was that
of Anita and his son and not Elshama.

The 'BEEF' between Jay Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo

Unknown to many,  two of Nigeria's great and Ex-Super Eagles skippers,
Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo are not having the best of
relationship but often try to keep it away from the media - Now we
know!
The sour relationship between them started many years ago after the
midfield maestro quit international football.
Kanu who at that time won the FA Cup with Portsmouth FC was selected
alongside Austin Okocha to decide who got the ambassadorial honour for
Fidelity Bank Plc.
Due to the influence of Kanu among some South East governors, the
former Arsenal striker won it and this did not go down well with Jay
jay.
The two, according to a very close source, have often avoided each
other any time event brings them together.
The source disclosed that, supremacy of sort thus exists between them
and it is of note that either of them ever invited another for any
personal event in the past.

"They always come here to ask for Pon-mo (locust beans" Ibadan shoprite attendant reveals

A breath of fresh air seemed to have hit Ibadan city with the opening
of Shoprite retail store on Thursday, June 27. Shoprite, located
beside the famous Cocoa House, the city's tallest structure, in Dugbe,
attracted thousands of residents on its opening day on June 28.
The size of the crowd that thronged the mall made it the biggest
attraction in the city. Various jokes also hit the social media about
the crowd of people that greeted the store on its opening day. A
famous joke says 102,000 people visited the store on that day, with
only about N35,000 made from sales. Many, the inventors of the jokes
claimed, were at the store to window shop and take pictures.

However, the situation had not changed much after one week. There was
a large crowd of people milling in and out of the mall, filling up all
the spaces within the store.
But so were the cash points; shoppers queued up at the 17 main cash
points and the additional two points at the kiosk section, giving the
cashiers no moment of rest on the job. Business owners, civil
servants, students and even school pupils in uniforms made up the
crowd, buying notebooks and other school items.
But in general, youths and middle-aged persons seemed to make up the
bulk of people at the store, Saturday PUNCH observed.
A student, Mr. Wale Olusola, who was at the mall on the day it opened,
said there was "mad human traffic" within and around the mall.  He
said, "We had to move slowly because there were so many people coming
in and going out. It was like forming queues all over the place.
People also had to be vigilant so that their phones and wallets didn't
get stolen by pick-pockets in the crowd."
A businessman, Mr. Biodun Azeez, described the opening of the mall as
a "good thing", saying he was happy with the development.
He said, "I've been here twice in three days and I always buy things.
There is always something to buy because it's hard to resist the lure
of the goods here. It's like they are all shouting 'come buy me'. And
you don't need to haggle over the price, which is sometimes
frustrating."
Another shopper, Mrs. Olumide Abulude, described the mall as a
'one-stop shop' and a new feature in the city.
"You don't even need to visit an open market like Agbeni because you
can get everything here. Their prices are also reasonable. You can get
groceries, meat and even locust beans here," she said, adding that
people generally have a wrong notion about the city.
"The truth is that Ibadan is up there and its people know how to enjoy
life. You can see the crowd here and the number of people buying and
buying things< Abulude added.
However, a shopper, Mr. Adewale Mayowa, said the crowd had been split
between the real buyers and the window shoppers.
He said, "There are indeed, a large number of real shoppers, but there
are also some who only come to see, take photos or buy something small
like sausage."
Shoprite is located within a merged stuctuer comprising the Cocoa Mall
and the Heritage Mall.
The Heritage Mall, which occupies the old Sketch House, was financed
by O'dua Investment Company at the cost of about N1.4bn, while the
Cocoa Mall, which is an extension of Cocoa House, is being done in
conjunction with a private developer, Topservices Limited.
Even though the malls were yet to be completed, as construction work
was still ongoing, when Saturday PUNCH visited the place, residents
were already excited about the prospect of having arguably the biggest
mall in South-West Nigeria.
Aside from Shoprite, others like PEP, Mr. Price, Cash and Carry,
Filmhouse Cinema, and Lifemate Furniture have begun operations, while
other spaces are being prepared.
But with the addition of the shopping malls and Shoprite to the scores
of other stores in Ibadan, the shopping culture of the residents will
arguably experience a major change. Many already suspect that open
markets like Agbeni and Aleshinloye might suffer now that people can
get most of the products under a roof, without having to move from
stall to stall, in the sun.
But a trader at Agbeni market, who identified herself as Alhaja
Risikat, debunked the fears.
She said, "There will always be people who prefer to come to us; so I
don't think it is ever going to affect us. We used to have Kingsway
and UTC in Ibadan and there were still other markets then, so it won't
make any difference at all."
Similarly, the managements of some other big stores in the city have
also said they are not threatened by Shoprite's arrival.
The expatriate owner of Trolleys, a store a few blocks away from
Shoprite, Mr. George Kay, described the situation as "give and take."
He said, "It is true that Shoprite brings a lot of traffic to this
place, but in that process, it is also opening the place up. So some
people coming here for the first time will notice our store too and
visit. "Sometimes, people who have been in traffic for long would stop
by our place and not even get to Shoprite. And there is nothing they
have that I don't have, but there are things I have that they don't
have.
"But on the other hand, the traffic here at the weekend was so bad
that the entrance to my shop was blocked. People coming to my store
were hindered by the traffic situation. So there is the benefit angle
and there is the damage angle too; but no fear from me."
Also at Foodco in Bodija, which offers a variety of services and
products, an official who did not give his name, said, "The sky is
large for every bird to fly."
The source also said nothing had changed at Foodco since the opening
of Shoprite in Ibadan.
He said, "There is a big population in Ibadan and we have our loyal
customers. Since they came, there has been no difference in our sales,
so the sky is large enough. People may go there (Shoprite) and check
what is happening there, but our customers know what we also offer."
A representative of Zooma store, also at Bodija, who spoke to our
correspondent, described the population of Ibadan as a huge factor to
consider.
She said, "When you consider the population of Ibadan, it's enough to
go round. However, I don't think their (Shoprite) coming to Ibadan
will affect standard stores. I think it's the open markets that will
be affected. Since they opened, business has been the same here."
At Challenge, a PEP store, which opened in December 2012, has been
popular with residents around there.
An official of the store, who spoke in confidence, also said the store
had nothing to worry about.
The source said, "We are not threatened at all because we have the
cheapest prices in town and our customers know that; that's what works
for us."
Meanwhile, an official of Shoprite, who spoke under condition of
anonymity because he said he was not authorised to speak to
journalists, said business has been good at the store.
However, when asked about sales figures, the official said employees
were not allowed to discuss sales. He, however, noted that the store
was worthy of the attention it had got in the city.
The source said, "Well, business has been good but we don't ever
discuss our sales. People have been coming to buy variety of things;
bread has been doing well and people even come for locust beans.
"When you compare the kind of investment we have put in the place, you
will know that it's worth it. We offer our customers aesthetics and
the very best."

Another Death! One Love Actor, Tony Umole Dies

The Nigerian movie industry has yet again been thrown into mourning
with the death of Tony Umole. He was  lead actor in "One Love" TV Soap
Opera.
Tajudeen Adepetu, the producer of One Love confirmed his death today 5
July 2013 . Umole acted in Abuja Connection back in 2003 with the
likes of Eucharia Anumobi and Enebeli Elebuwa. He has since featured
in many movies after that. He was also known to be a great script
writer.

Beware: Your Phone May Soon Land You In Jail

If the recent pronouncement of the Corps Marshall of the Federal Road
Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka, is anything to go by, Nigerian prisons
will soon be playing host to a new set of 'tenants' – motorists who
make or receive calls while driving.

Chidoka announced in Abuja last Saturday that the era of collecting
fines from motorists who violate road safety laws of the country had
gone.

The FRSC boss said the system was no longer a deterrent to errant
motorists. He said the corps would now prosecute violators of its
rules, especially the one prohibiting the use of telephones while
driving, and ensure they are sent to jail.

The law may push many errant motorists to prison, even though on the
list of offences and penalties posted on the FRSC website, the offence
currently attracts a N4,000 fine.

But this does not seem to concern the FRSC as its spokesperson, Mr.
Jonas Agwu, said the duty of the corps was to ensure the total
eradication of deaths brought about by such prohibited practices.

Agwu shed light on the new strategy in a telephone interview with
Saturday PUNCH on Wednesday. He explained that the decision to
introduce the prison dimension came about when it became clear
thatmany motorists would rather be caught and pay the prescribed fine
than obey the law.

He said, "The typical Nigerian motorist will ask you, 'How much is
your fine? Let me pay and go'. What many do not realise is that
getting them to pay the fine is not the issue here, but ensuring that
they do not endanger their own lives and those of others.

"We realise that in order to effectively put such motorists in check,
it is necessary to get the judiciary involved. This is because the
average Nigerian does not want his reputation dented by a conviction.
A conviction by a court of law, even when it has to do with a mere
traffic offence, may hamper one's future ambtitions."

Agwu did not want to make a categorical statement on the length of
sentences for violators of the telephone rule. According to him, the
courts would have to use their discretion.

The FRSC spokesman said, "The reason we are not going to prescribe
such is that sometimes a violator may be picked up while exhibiting
bad behaviour on the road. When such a person gets to the court, he or
she may become humble. This may become part of what would be used by
the judge or magstrate to deliver the sentence. The violator may go to
jail for a few months, weeks or even days.

"Even when the court asks the violator to pay a fine if found guilty,
the purpose of deterrence which the FRSC seek will be fulfilled. A
motorist may not be jailed.

"You need to understand that being asked to pay a fine at an FRSC
office is different from being asked to pay a fine by a court, after
being found guilty. The conviction enters court records and dents the
person's imagine for ever."

In a country where traffic cameras are non-existent, how will the
commission effectively carry out this new rule?

Agwu replied that apart from 'native intelligence', which officials
would be expected to deploy in their patrols, FRSC might approach
mobile service providers for call logs to back up a charge against a
suspected violator.

"Apart from these, our patrol vans are equipped with state-of-the-art
equipment, which include cameras. All these will be in use to ensure
motorists change these bad habits on the roads," he said.

However, some motorists told our correspondent that they were sure the
commission would not go ahead with the plan.

"How many people will they arrest and put in jail? Almost everybody
receives or makes calls while driving," a motorist told our
correspondent.

A commercial bus driver, Muniru Adetoro, laughed when our correpondent
informed him the offence would now attract a jail term.

"Do you know how many laws are being flouted in this country? This
kind of law cannot stand against rich people. Who will arrest a rich
man using a phone while driving?" he asked.

The FRSC has said that in addition to the mobile courts that had
previously been hearing traffic offences, conventional courts will
also be involved.

The police and other traffic agencies will also be involved in the
campaign, as the FRSC spokesman indicated.

"The police don't need to arrest anybody and bring them to FRSC. All
they need do is arrest violators, charge them to court and give us a
report for record purposes. The only way this can work is if other
security agencies who are stakeholders in traffic management
collaborate with us. The enforcement has started," the FRSC spokesman
said.

20 Killed In Renewed Fulani Attack In Benue

Over 20 persons were Friday feared dead in clashes between Tiv farmers
and invading Fulani herdsmen at Nzorov ward, Guma local government
area of Benue state.

According to sources, the entire Nzorov ward, Iyordye Akaahena village
was razed by the invaders including the house of the former Benue
state Head of Service, Mr. Mike Iyordye.

The crisis is coming just few weeks after the feuding parties had
agreed to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

According to our source, the heavily armed invaders stormed the Tiv
village Friday afternoon in a convoy of vehicles from neighbouring
Nasarawa State, dressed in military camouflage uniforms.

"They stormed the village when most of our young men were in the
farms; they leveraged on that to burn down the entire village after
killing several persons which should be over 20 at the moment.

"Though we are yet to account for several persons because fighting is
still going on at the moment, but people are already fleeing from the
village in search of safe haven in neighbouring villages," the source
said.

When contacted, Guma Local Government Council Chairman, Mr. Frank Adii
confirmed that at the time of filing this report, fighting was still
raging in the village.

"From what I have gathered so far, the casualty figure is high with
many injured but I am yet to confirm the number of deaths though I've
already alerted security agencies of the development," he lamented.

We Won’t Leave PDP – Tambuwal, Amaechi

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal,
yesterday dispelled growing rumours that he was on the verge of
leaving the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for an opposition
party.
Tambuwal told journalists at the Benin Airport, Edo State, yesterday
that he was still a member of the PDP and was not set to leave the
ruling party.

President Goodluck Jonathan had warned elected political officeholders
under the platform of the PDP that the party would not hesitate to
apply the big stick for anti-party activities and fraternising with
the opposition.

The speaker has severally missed state and PDP functions for events
organised by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which has fused
with the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Congress for
Progressive Change (CPC) to form the All Progressive Congress (APC).

"I am still a member of the PDP. I remain in the PDP, I am a PDP, I am
hearing that rumour from you," Tambuwal said, laughing. `

President Jonathan was reported to have warned that the "new PDP"
would not condone indiscipline, after accusing some of the leading
lights of openly fraternising with the opposition.

On the 2013 budget impasse, Tambuwal, who was in Benin City, Edo
State, as a guest of the deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu, on his
birthday and wedding anniversary, said that consultations were on and,
at the appropriate time, Nigerians would benefit from it.

"Well, you know it is all about consultation and we will keep talking
to ourselves and ensure that Nigerians get the best out of it. But I
assure you that what the National Assembly is doing is to ensure that
the Nigerian people get the best out of the situation. We are not
there to undermine the interest of Nigerians; we will be the last
people to ever do that."

Thousands of ACN supporters led by Odubu rolled out the drums to give
a rousing welcome to Tambuwal.

Also on Thursday night, Rivers State governor and chairman of the
Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF), Chief Rotimi Amaechi, refuted the
speculation that he was making moves to join the yet-to-be-registered
APC, having allegedly taken over the structures of the new political
group in the state.

The governor vowed to remain a member of the PDP despite his current
ordeals with the leadership of the party both at the national and
state levels.

Amaechi spoke in Port Harcourt while reacting to allegations levelled
against him by the state chairman of the PDP, Mr Felix Obuah, when he
led a delegation to visit President Jonathan in Abuja.

Obuah had alleged that the governor was making efforts to destabilise
the party in Rivers before crossing over to the APC.

But Amaechi, who spoke through the commissioner for information and
communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, said although the PDP chairman
was entitled to his opinion, "he should not seek relevance by
constituting himself into a trouble-maker".

Ice Prince Emerges As Nigeria’s Hottest Rapper

Self styled rapper, Ice Prince, is becoming Nigeria's hottest rapper.
SAMUEL ABULUDE writes on his increasing fame and wealth

Since his first single 'Oleku' was released, Ice Prince's fame has
been on the rise. He is becoming a force to reckon with in the rap
genre of music and his colleagues in the music industry are beginning
to see the humble young man as someone who indeed has more to offer.

To prove that he has come of age in the dynamic music industry, Ice
Prince won the Best African Act category of the Black Entertainment
BET Awards held last Sunday in the United States.

This feat is more resounding in the sense that he competed against
African star acts and an established star like Tu Face Idibia arguably
the most popular and award winning African and Nigerian hip hop star.

For an industry that hasn't until most recently paid attention to the
Hip-Hop genre (the Western-originated culture falls fifth place to
more favourable genres like Pop, Highlife, Fuji and RnB), Hip-Hop
artistes have done impressively well to stay afloat.

According to Tony Doe, former rapper and OAP, Hip Hop has never been
seen as our culture, that's why it's been hard for Hip-Hop acts to
make a mark.

For years, pioneers struggled to make a mark but were faced with
constant rejection up until 2009 when the likes of M.I and Naeto C
started to break bank.

It would be in tune to say Panshak 'Ice Prince' Zamani is currently
Nigeria's hottest rapper. The Minna-born and Jos Town-bred Chocolate
City Records artiste is soaring high and achieving all that Nigerian
Hip-Hop artistes have ever longed for: recognition, fame and most
importantly, growing wealth.

In 2006, veteran rappers Modnine and Terry thaRapman were discussing
on how to shoot a video for their classic duet 'Spazmodic'. Then,
unknown upcoming rappers M.I, Jesse Jagz and Ice Prince were told they
could appear in the video, Zamani goes down on his knees, thanking
God, Modey and Terry for what he considered as a breakthrough.

Jesse Jagz' appeal in the Northern part of Nigeria may have gradually
faded as the Pop singer has switched from Pop to dancehall/reggae
music and is battling his other demons. Ice Prince has been made a
perfect replacement, once again regaining the love from the North. How
do you think he came about his Northern-themed single 'Aboki' and the
follow up 'VIP'? He has won the hearts of the rich, influential
Northern Nigerian elites, including Ministers, Governors and members
of the Royal family. If he isn't having lunch with a senator in Kaduna
today, he's having dinner with the Gombe State Governor tomorrow.

Ice Prince's asking price for a show now topples into the millions
something only an M.I and Naeto C can brag about. Ice Prince however
has more following from the teens, a large percentage that makes up
the music fan base in Nigeria.

Fame has transcended into fortune of course; the rapper who drives a
Range Rover SUV is said to have relocated from his apartment in Palm
Groove estate to a more spacious crib in Ogudu area of Lagos. He has
also completed a mansion back at home for his siblings (Ice lost his
father a Police Officer in 1999 and his mum in May 2011).

Making deals with Smirnoff Ice and LG Electronics, the endorsement has
started knocking.

The rapper's buzz is getting bigger by the day, some big that he's
making appearances in Nollywood movies. In March 2013, he featured
alongside Majid Michael in Yvonne Nelson's 'House of Gold' movie.

A proud father of a son, Ice has begun to build his own crew. In 2011,
he relocated his long time J Town music friends GRIP Boiz (three
artistes – J Milla, Yung L, Endia and a producer Chopstix) to Lagos.
He works with two managers, a business associate, Tobi Sanni-Daniel
and road manager, Bishmang Nanle.

In a space of barely four years, the growth and appeal have been
astronomical. And even though we'd love to give another buzzing rapper
Olamide a lot of props, nothing, for now, can be compared with the
Fire of Zamani.

We Can’t Continue To Graduate Unemployable Students – ASUU

National President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr.
Nasir Issa-Fagee, has said that the Nigerian universities will not
continue to churn out unemployable graduates because of lack of
training facilities in the institutions.

The ASUU President, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard in Abuja, said that
though the strike affected both parents and students, there was the
need for sacrifice by all the stakeholders in order to ensure that
Nigeria graduates competed with their peers in other parts of the
world.

He noted that the agreement which the union entered into with the
federal government in 2009 was due for review in June 20th, 2012,
regretting that many years after the agreement it had not been
substantially implemented.

Declaring the indefinite strike as total, the ASUU President said that
though the strike had affected academic calendar, the universities
cannot continue in the old way of doing things that was not beneficial
to graduates after their long years in school.

He said, "The academic calendar had already been affected. For the
fact that students were graduating they do not even perform well when
they get into the labour market.

"I don't really know what is our priority, is it that we just continue
churning out graduates with certificate who may not perform because
they have not been trained adequately because of lack of training
facilities, research, laboratories, workshops and adequately equipped
libraries.

" This is an agreement that was signed in 2009 and it supposed to have
been reviewed in 20th June 12 last year, I hope we are now in July,
2013 that is one year after, we have not substantially implemented
that agreement talk less of commencing the process of review.

"So I think that is the key issue. If government is serious, it would
have substantially implemented the agreement before June 20 and
commence the process of review of that agreement."

$40m Internet Surveillance Contract: Presidency, National Assembly Set For Showdown

President Jonathan; Senate President, David Mark and Speaker, House of
Reps, Hon Aminu Tambuwal

The Presidency and the National Assembly are set for a showdown over
the controversial $40m Internet surveillance contract awarded by the
Federal Government to an Israeli firm, Elbit Systems.
The Federal Government had reportedly awarded the contract to the
company to install a system that would enable security agencies to
monitor the activities of Nigerians on the Internet.

The House of Representatives had last month asked the Presidency to
halt the contract but the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, had
at a public forum in Lagos defended the issue.

We learnt on Thursday that the lawmakers were miffed over indications
that the Presidency was going ahead with the contract.

Already, the House has begun moves to stop the contract by all means.

It is expected to invite the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo
Dasuki (retd.), and other top security officials to explain the
current status of the contract and why the Presidency was bent on
ignoring its resolution.

The House is expected to work with the Senate to frustrate the plan by
ensuring that it is not among the projects to be funded when the
current contention over the 2013 budget is finally resolved.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Information and
Communications Technology, Mr. Ibrahim Gusau, confirmed the lawmakers'
plans to our correspondent in Abuja.

Enquiries by our correspondents at the Presidency and the Ministry of
Communication Technology did not produce any result as officials
claimed either that they were not involved or aware of the contract.

But Gusau, who had sponsored a motion in the House for the
investigation of the contract, told our correspondent that the matter
had been shrouded in secrecy. He said this informed the resolve to
invite key government officials to say what they know about the
surveillance contract.

He said, "We are going to invite the National Security Adviser and
other key people in security to say what they know about the Internet
surveillance contract.

"They cannot spend our money without appropriation. The $40m belongs
to Nigerians and as representatives of the people, we need to know
about it.

"The Internet surveillance contract will abridge the freedom of
Nigerians and we do not agree with it. If we allow it, it means that
whatever you and I do on the Internet will be viewed by them. That is
against the right to privacy and personal freedom."

We learnt that the Presidency was determined to pursue the matter
despite the opposition from the National Assembly.

A security source who spoke to one of our correspondents in confidence
said the Presidency was convinced that the $40m Internet monitoring
contract would assist security forces to stop terrorist plots and
other crimes before they are executed.

"The National Assembly is free to make all the noise, but the
government has no intention of stopping the contract because its
advantages far outweigh any political or financial considerations or
reasons the lawmakers may advance as excuses to stop the project.

"We are talking about national security here and if the US that is
regarded as the bastion of social liberty and democracy can spy on its
citizens for national security, how much more a developing country
like us where terrorists groups are threatening our political
stability," the top security officer stated.

Another official said the Presidency may, however, tactfully avoid a
showdown by reaching out to National Assembly members on the issue, in
view of its implications for national security.

It was learnt that the decision of the Presidency to keep mum on the
matter was a strategic move meant to give the impression that it had
yielded to the demand of the lawmakers.

We learnt that the secrecy surrounding the project was informed by
fears that it might be compromised by politicians and critics who may
misconstrue government's motives.

"This was the reason why government was alarmed when the contractor
announced the contract in a media statement without seeking the
Presidency's approval.

"What the government feared has happened because opposition
politicians and other critics who know nothing about national security
are crying wolf where there is none," a senior official said. [Punch]

Our Chairman Is Not A Boko Haram Sponsor- Borno ANPP

The Borno State Chapter of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) on
Friday condemned the burning of its state chairman's house by the
youth vigilante group in Maiduguri, the state capital. The group had
accused the party chairman, Mala Othman, of being an accomplice of the
Boko Haram insurgents.

The ANPP said the accusation against its chairman and the burning of
his house were politically motivated by extraneous forces that have
infiltrated the youth vigilante.

The vigilantes, also called Civilian JTF, have been assisting the
Nigerian military to identify and apprehend members of the outlawed
insurgent group. They have also been victims of attacks by the
insurgents.

In a press statement issued after a meeting on Friday, and signed by
its state secretary, Bakura Shettima, the ANPP said it would have
ignored the incident if it was not ostensibly targeted to smear the
proven integrity of Othman.

"Our party chairman, Othman, is an accomplished politician who has the
interest of the people and the development of the state at heart.
Accusing him of such behavior is witch hunting of which the people of
Borno state are never known for," the party scribe said.

Mr. Shettima argued that the attempt to implicate the ANPP chairman in
the activities of the outlawed Boko Haram sect was a total
contradiction of the basic facts on ground.

'In order to put the records straight, we want to establish the fact
that it is on record that 99 percent of politicians killed since the
Boko Haram insurgency began in the state are members of the ANPP, the
ruling party in Borno State. The party has put Borno State on the path
of unprecedented development under the able leadership of our State
Chairman, Alhaji Mala Othman, who is a leader with unquestionable
character. With this background, it is unimaginable to say that he is
sponsoring the killing of his own people.

"We are appealing to the Youth Volunteers to be careful not to take
the law into their hands and should be aware of politicians who might
use them against their opponents in order to score cheap political
goal," he said.

Mr. Shettima, who called for full investigation of the Monday assault
on the ANPP chieftain, appealed that "the youth volunteers should
therefore confine themselves to the areas where they live and report
any suspicious people or movement to security agencies for necessary
action."

On Monday, the youth vigilante attacked the New GRA, Maiduguri, home
of Mala Othman attempting to arrest him, but ended up burning his
house after he was helped to escape by security operatives.

There Is More To Me Than Flashy Cars And Girls, Wizkid Opens Up

AYODEJI IBRAHIM BALOGUN A.K.A. WIZKID IS NO DOUBT ONE OF THE BIGGEST
NAMES IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY. OF LATE, HE HAS BEEN IN THE NEWS
FOR SOME NEGATIVE THINGS: OBSESSION WITH CARS AND WOMEN, FRAUD
PERPETRATED WITH HIS NAME, TROUBLE WITH HIS RECORD LABEL AND SOME
OTHERS. IN THIS INTERVIEW WITH LANRE ODUKOYA, WIZKID CLEARS THE AIR ON
THESE CONTROVERSIES. HE ALSO SPEAKS ON HIS RECENT AUTO CRASH AND
COLLABORATION WITH FEMI KUTI

MY CAR ACCIDENT…

I really don't like to talk about bad experiences because I believe
that it's like a lesson and stepping stone for everybody in life to
learn something at some point. When I had that accident, it was the
second time it would happen to me, so it was a reality check on me.
What if one's life ended that day? God forbid! I'm grateful for life
and I made a promise never to slow down on what I'm good at.

WHY I WAS INVITED BY THE POLICE…
Some unsuspecting guys have been chatting with some fake Wizkid and we
can't readily give full details. We were invited by the Police which
we granted. We gave our statements, the other party made their
statements as well, but I cannot really say anything about that until
the Police go further with their investigations. Though, we know that
with the details that have been given, they must have been talking to
a fake Wizkid or fake Wizkid management. So, this is really not from
me, my management or label. If you have contacted anybody regarding
Wizkid and you have paid, provide the bank details and email
correspondences. If there was a contract, provide it and it's as
simple as that. We're not fighting anyone. In fact, we sympathize with
anyone who has been duped. For a while now, we've been having cases of
people reporting that they've been chatting or planning business with
a fake Wizkid's manager or they booked Wizkid for shows. Some even go
to the extent of creating fake accounts in my name and collecting
money from people. I just want to re-emphasize that there's a process
of booking Wizkid for shows which is just like the normal standard
most of us are familiar with. Everybody knows that if you want to book
Wizkid, it's either you go to Empire Music Entertainment (EME) which
is my label or you connect with my manager, Godwin Tom. These are the
main ways to book me for a show or whatever form of service you need
me to handle. Chatting with a Wizkid that has promised to do something
for you or charging you some money are fake and I never charge
anything with anybody directly. I don't discuss fees. I allow my
management and label handle my business. So, nobody talks directly to
me concerning business.

WHAT I'VE DONE TO CURTAIL FRAUD PERPETRATED IN MY NAME…
I've tried as much as possible to create more awareness about this on
the social media and shared it with as much people as I can access and
I'm just sharing this with the press. My management is coming up with
details and phone numbers to reach if you want to do a business with
Wizkid. It's either you contact my manager of EME directly, but even
when you contact me, it's the normal procedure that I direct you to
the booking office as well. The process is simple. You'd send us your
request via email, the booking office will contact you from the email
address you provided with a booking questionnaire. The questionnaire
will have information about your event as well as your publicity plans
and other special requests you need.

EME/STARBOI EVOLUTION…
We're doing very well, it's been fantastic and we've been have
meetings and going back and forth devising new plans for making EME
one of the best record labels in Africa, not just Nigeria. We're
putting in works, everyone is currently in the studio and Banky W has
shot a couple of videos. We were at the video shoot two days ago and
we're still working to be the best we can. I've set the record
straight not just from this medium, but everything I've released like
in JayeJaye song. That record was put out by Starboi, my new company
in collaboration with EME. EME is definitely still Wizkid's record
label, Starboi is a record label that I run and I have a couple of
producers that I'm working with. So, we're expanding the business.
When Banky W and I started, the dream has always been to build an
empire to help more people and give them that platform to excel too.
And it cannot just happen through one person, we had to branch out.
The industry is very big with about five million talented kids out
there looking for channel to hone their skills and become stars. And
now that there's Starboi, everyone can start something like that to
help somebody become who he or she wants to be. It's been a great
evolution because I've worked with legends and it's still a learning
process.

MY FORTHCOMING ALBUM…
I tweeted my track list which has Olamide, Don Jazzy, D'Banj and Banky
W. The album is ready; we are just putting the final touches to it and
right now we're just mixing and mastering. In a few days, the album
will be out and we're going to be having a listening party pretty soon
too and we will be announcing the venue, date and other details. The
album is coming out really good and I'm very happy with everything I
recorded on it and I believe that this will be better than the last
one I did.

RELATIONSHIP WITH MALEEK BERRY
I've known Maleek for about a year and a couple of months now. From
the first day we met, we've been talking about business. We took our
time to plan something properly and we've been executing our plans
right now. This is what I said about branching out and giving other
people the platform. Someone gave me that platform when I was coming
up too.

COLLABORATION WITH FEMI KUTI…
Many people didn't expect that and it was to show that sometimes
people don't understand that it's all about music. Some people think
that all Wizkid talks about is girls, flashy cars and all that. All I
speak about in my music are my true life experiences. If I'd not been
through it, I wouldn't talk about it. So, when I decided to do
JayeJaye featuring Femi Kuti, I wanted to pass a message across to all
the kids aspiring to be like me that you'd have to continue to learn.
The song was to build the gap between the old and the young people.
And I really appreciate Uncle Femi Kuti for doing that song with me
because I called him a day before we recorded the song and he obliged
me.

PENCHANT FOR HIGH END CARS…
I don't think I have a penchant for flashy cars. A lot of people in
Lagos drive more expensive cars than mine in Lagos. I don't think I'm
about the cars as against what many think of me. I just like to live
comfortably. It is part of the work, I need car as tool to do my
business. How about people in government spending so much money on
automobiles? If someone works hard for his money, I don't think
anything is wrong with what he likes to buy with the money. I work
hard, why would I not live well?
