Revealed: Woolwich killers are British-born and of Nigerian descent but 'were acting alone'

The Woolwich killers are of Nigerian background, sources have confirmed.

The man seen ranting on video shortly after the murder of a soldier is believed to be Michael Adebolajo.

But it is understood the men, who are being treated in separate hospitals while under arrest, are most likely to be British citizens converted to a radical form of Islam.

They are not thought to have links to terror groups based in Nigeria, such as the jihadist militant organisation Boko Haram.

Police were today seen outside a detached house in a Lincolnshire village where they raided a home where Adebolajo is listed as having lived in the past.

There was no answer at the address believed to be that of Adebolajo's father, named by neighbours as Anthony Adebolajo.

Mr Adebolajo, 56, is believed to be a trained nurse now working in a managerial capacity within the NHS.

The modern property was being monitored by two police patrol cars stationed outside.

Later in the morning, plain clothes officers, thought to be from the Metropolitan Police, arrived at the modern estate and the house and driveway was  sealed off with police tape. An officer at the scene described the property as a 'crime scene'.

Mr Adebolajo bought the property for £218,000 in 2002. At one time a woman who wore a burka was thought to live with him.

They believed he had up to four grown up children, although few if any are thought to have stayed at the house for any period of time.

In a chilling rant captured on camera, the knife-wielding man declared: 'The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers.

The who launched the terrifying diatribe in Woolwich, south-east London, believed to be Adebolajo, who has been identified on Twitter and web forums as one of the arrested men.

He added, in the video obtained by ITV News: 'Remove your governments - they don't care about you. You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start bursting our guns? You think politicians are going to die?

'No, it's going to be the average guy, like you, and your children. So get rid of them - tell them to bring our troops back so we can ... so you can all live in peace.’

The serviceman was murdered yards from the barracks in Woolwich, south-east London, yesterday.

In broad daylight, an attacker and an accomplice repeatedly stabbed and tried to behead the young serviceman in front of dozens of passers-by.

The attacker, speaking in a clear south London accent, declared in the rant: ‘You people will never be safe. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’

Throughout the frenzied attack the two killers shouted ‘Allah Akbar’ - Arabic for ‘God is great’ - then demanded horrified witnesses film them as they ranted over the  crumpled body.

The two attackers in their 20s, waited calmly for armed police to arrive before charging at officers brandishing a rusty revolver, knives and meat cleavers.

When the old pistol was shot towards police it backfired and blew the thumb off one of the men.

Moments later they were cut down in a hail of bullets believed to be fired by a woman marksman. Last night both men were being treated in hospital for their wounds.

Before police arrived the man identified as Adebolajo, said: ‘We swear by Almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reasons we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day.

Yesterday’s slaughter took place 200 yards from The Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich and close to a primary school at 2.20pm.

Witnesses told how the men drove a dark blue Vauxhall Tigra on to the pavement and knocked down the soldier.

We will never buckle to terror': Cameron spreads defiant message online that Britain will face down threat from extremists

We will never buckle to terror': Cameron spreads defiant message online that Britain will face down threat from extremists The attack has been roundly condemned David Cameron will today chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee after issuing a defiant message that Britain will ’never buckle’ to terrorists in the wake of the horrific knife attack in Woolwich. The Prime Minister last night used his personal Twitter account to vow to face down the threat posed by extremists. As Mr Cameron prepared to return to London to take charge of the government’s emergency response, he chose to use social media to spread the message: ’We will never buckle to terror.’ Did you witness the killing and take pictures or video of the appalling incident? Or do you know the men involved? Email us at mailonlinepictures@dailymail.co.uk The Prime Minister cancelled talks with French President Francois Hollande in Paris to travel urgently to back to London. Mr Cameron described the attack as ’truly shocking’ and 'the most appalling crime' after reports suggested a soldier wearing a Help for Heroes t-shirt was attacked by two men wielding machete-style knives. He had been at an Brussels summit before travelling to Paris but tore up his schedule to receive a detailed telephone briefing on the latest from Woolwich from Home Secretary Theresa May. Last night she chaired the first meeting of the Cobra emergency committee. After being briefed by the head of Scotland Yard and the director of the security services, she branded it a ’barbaric case’, adding that 'there is a strong indication that it was an act of terrorism'. The Home Secretary added: 'This attack was an attack on everyone in the United Kingdom, and it will be condemned by people from every community. 'Our thoughts and prayers tonight are with the victim and his family. 'We have seen terrorism on the streets of Britain before, and have always stood firm against it. Despicable acts like these will not go unpunished.' Met commissioner Bernard Hogan Howe, Met Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond and London Mayor Boris Johnson and the intelligence services attended last night's Cobra meeting in Downing Street. Mr Cameron gave a press conference from the Élysée Palace before returning to London last night. He said: People across Britain, people in every community, I believe, will utterly condemn this attack. 'We have had these sorts of attacks before in our country and we never buckle in the face of them.' When news of the attack broke, he wrote on Twitter: 'The killing in Woolwich is truly shocking.' Ahead of tonight’s Cobra meeting Mr Johnson said: ’This afternoon’s attack in Woolwich is a sickening, deluded and unforgivable act of violence. ’My thoughts are with the victim and his family.’ He told reporters: 'I think it is very clear what happened tonight in Woolwich was a sickening and unforgivable act of violence, and I know thoughts of millions of Londoners and people around the country will be with the family of the victim tonight.  What we need to do is get the full facts.' Labour leader Ed Miliband said he is cutting short a visit to Germany to return to the UK. He said: 'This is a truly appalling murder which will shock the entire country. 'All of my thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim. The British people will be horrified by what has happened in Woolwich. They will be united in believing that this terror on our streets cannot be allowed to stand. 'The Labour Party will offer the Government our complete support in establishing the facts of what happened and ensuring that those responsible face the full force of British justice.' Other political leaders called for calm and warned against knee-jerk reactions to the killing. Earlier Mr Miliband said on Twitter: 'Shocked by appalling events in Woolwich. Whole country will be horrified by what has happened.' A statement from the Muslim Council of Britain said it understood the victim was a member of the Armed Forces. It said: 'This is a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn this unreservedly. 'Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. 'We understand the victim is a serving member of the Armed Forces. Muslims have long served in this country's Armed Forces, proudly and with honour. 'This attack on a member of the Armed Forces is dishonourable, and no cause justifies this murder. ' 'This action will no doubt heighten tensions on the streets of the United Kingdom. 'We call on all our communities, Muslim and non-Muslim, to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail.' UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: ’We are all left horrified by this appalling attack on the peaceful streets of London and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the young man who was killed and those who were injured. ’I hope and believe that this is an isolated incident and appeal for calm in our communities.’ Respect MP George Galloway was condemned by critics after writing on Twitter: 'This sickening atrocity in London is exactly what we are paying the same kind of people to do in Syria.' Leader of the far-Right BNP Nick Griffin claimed soldiers were 'safer on front line than in London, that's the reality of mass immigration', adding: 'The politicians who did this to Britain should hang.' Tory vice-chairman Michael Fabricant wrote on Twitter: ’I do hope members of the armed forces are not now advised to not wear uniforms in our streets for fear of terror attacks.’ Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who was briefed on the incident before the Cobra meeting, said: 'A shocking and horrifying attack. This afternoon witnessed a tragedy on the streets of our capital.' The Queen is said to be 'concerned' at the news of the attack and has asked to be kept up to date on the latest developments, Buckingham Palace said.

Chelsea in pole position to land £80m Ronaldo after former Real president Calderon dismisses United return

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has raised the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo following Jose Mourinho to Chelsea... after dismissing Manchester United's chances of re-signing the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo, aged 27, is at the centre of a £80m bidding war after growing disillusioned with life in the Spanish capital.

When asked whether the Portugal flyer was happy at Real Madrid, Calderon told talkSPORT: 'Ronaldo said he was sad at the beginning of the season. I think the relationship with the current president is not a good one, maybe because the president doesn’t like the players he inherited.

There are not many teams that could afford to pay him what he deserves and who can pay Real Madrid what they are asking for. There are three clubs - Manchester City, PSG and Chelsea. I don’t think any other club is going to pay that amount of money for a player.

'They are going to negotiate the contract now and they will make a decision. It’s something we will know in a few weeks

United have first option to sign Ronaldo if Real decide to sell and the Portugal star favours a return to Old Trafford.

But Mourinho, with whom he has worked at the Bernabeu for the past three years, has added him to his list of premium targets.

Wayne Rooney, who would prefer to move to Chelsea, and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani are also wanted by Mourinho.

Ronaldo has spent four seasons at Real Madrid but has become frustrated by the lack of harmony at the club.

Although Mourinho is unlikely to be able to persuade all three forwards to move to Chelsea, the club intend to move swiftly this summer.

Mourinho’s relationship with Ronaldo was under scrutiny last weekend when the forward appeared to shout ‘**** you’ at his coach after scoring his 200th goal for Real.

Ronaldo spoke in Portuguese when he pointed to the Real club badge and shouted ‘I’m here, I’m here’ in front of Mourinho as the coach prepares to quit Spain after three years in charge of the world’s biggest football club.

'Exceptional' Bale would be right at home at Real Madrid, claims Ramos

'Exceptional' Bale would be right at home at Real Madrid, claims Ramos
Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos believes Gareth Bale would be right at home at the Bernabeu.

There has been considerable speculation about the future of the Wales international after Tottenham failed to qualify for the Champions League, with Madrid the most likely destination.

Ramos said: 'Gareth Bale is a Real Madrid-quality signing. He has had an exceptional season. He can punish any team in the world and has the footballing qualities we look for in Madrid.

'I am sure Madrid will not be the only team that want to sign him - but he is the right mould for us,' he said in The Sun.

Bale rounded off a remarkable year on Sunday by scoring his 26th goal of the season, but his wonder winner against Sunderland was not enough to earn the club Champions League qualification.

The club are understandably keen to hold on to their star man and manager Andre Villas-Boas recently called on the forward to end speculation about his future by signing a new deal at White Hart Lane.

For now, the signs look promising for Tottenham fans. From his comments in the immediate aftermath of the victory over Sunderland, he seemed in no mood to abandon ship and head to Madrid.

'We fought hard this season, the team and the manager have been great,' he said.

'We have got the record points for the club in the Premier League.

'That would normally be enough to qualify for the Champions League, but it's not meant to be again.

'It's disappointing, but we will pick ourselves up again.

'We will just have to regroup this season and give it another go.'

'The first guy goes for her with a machete... she took him out like Robocop...': Rapper's tweets among eyewitness accounts of horrific attack

A rapper who was witness to the shocking Woolwich attack revealed the true horror of the situation as he posted a series of tweets from the scene.

Boya Dee was among a number of eyewitnesses who saw the incident yesterday from start to finish, and described how the suspects tried to attack police officers after hacking at a man with a machete.

Describing what he saw, he wrote: 'The two black bredas run this white guy over then hop out the car and start chopping mans head off with machete!!'

In another dramatic tweet he wrote: 'The first guy goes for the female fed with the machete and she not even ramping she took man out like robocop never seen nutn like it.'

It was confirmed by police last night that two men had been arrested and officers from the counter-terrorist unit were leading the investigation into the killing.

‘In my opinion, they were waiting for the police to arrive to be shot by the police. That's the only thing I can think. It's horrendous what they were doing to that guy.’

Some ‘brave’ women tried to shield the man on the ground from them, he added. The witness also said that it was 20 minutes before armed police arrived at the scene.

‘When the armed police came flying around the corner, the man with the beanie hat, the tall guy, he charged at the police vehicle,’ he said. ‘A shot was fired by the other guy with the gun.'

The comments by the witness came after the man was killed and two others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds yesterday following a ‘serious incident’ understood to involve a serving soldier.

Some witnesses described seeing a ‘beheading’ while another described seeing a man wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt being attacked with a machete-style knife and dumped in a street.

Woolwich and Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford said it was his understanding that one person, a serving soldier, was dead and his two alleged killers were taken to hospital.

London Ambulance Service confirmed a man was found dead at the scene, while two other men were taken to hospital, one of them in a serious condition.

London Air Ambulance confirmed that one patient was airlifted from the scene, while another was taken away by road ambulance.

Cheryl Spruce, who lives near the incident, told Sky News that a nearby school was put into ‘lockdown’. She said: ‘The police were telling us to take an alternative route to get to school.

‘There were police everywhere. There were 30 to 40 police officers. Police officers in each road were stopping people from walking anywhere. It's mayhem out there at the moment.’

John Wilson Street was shut in both directions between Artillery Place and New Ferry Approach.

Pictures showing three men lying on the ground appeared on Twitter shortly after the incident.

The Ministry of Defence was urgently looking at the reports that the incident involved a soldier but had no further comment. The incident occurred some 200 yards from the Royal Artillery Barracks.

The barracks, also known as the Woolwich station, now houses a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards.

Woolwich Common remains a designated military training area. The shooting events at the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were held at a temporary venue at the Barracks.

Were they inspired by Al Qaeda magazine? Authorities investigating whether terrorists were spurred into action by publication which urges 'lone wolf' attacks

The Woolwich terror attack has chilling echoes of a previous plot to kidnap and behead a British Muslim soldier.

Five men were jailed in 2008 after police smashed a Birmingham-based terror cell’s plan to burn a kidnapped soldier’s body and parade his head on a stick as a warning to other Muslims against joining the British Army.

Thankfully, ringleader Parviz Khan failed to identify a soldier to target before they were detained by the security services.

Khan had links to Al Qaeda in Pakistan and said in a conversation bugged by MI5: ‘Like that, I think you cut it off like you cut a pig. Then you put it on a stick and we say, this is to all Muslims man want to join the Kuffar (non-believer) army - this is what will happen to you.

‘Then we throw the body, burn it, send the video to the chacha . The chacha can release it there. These people gonna go crazy.’ The words of Khan, jailed for life, were an ominous warning.

Last night, as armed police guarded two men suspected of killing and trying to behead a soldier near Woolwich barracks, detectives were urgently trying to establish how the killers were radicalised.

Officers were checking jihadi websites where preachers of hate urge Islamic extremists to behead soldiers. The authorities will also be investigating whether the attackers had been spurred into action by reading Al Qaeda’s English-language magazine, Inspire.

The publication is produced by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and contains exhortations to carry out so-called ‘lone wolf’ terrorist attacks by self-motivated groups and individuals.

Articles and ‘jihadi advertisements’ have urged people to carry out attacks with knives and to run people down in vehicles.

The Boston Marathon bombers used instructions contained in the first issue of the magazine to build and detonate their devices. The guide was called ‘How to build a bomb in the kitchen of your mom’.

Inspire has been linked to at least 15 terrorism cases and Al Qaeda made an abortive attempt to publish the 11th issue of the magazine just days ago.

It is believed that intelligence agencies intervened in the publication process, meaning that the file was blank when people who downloaded it tried to open it. A previous issue was doctored so a section on bomb-making was replaced with cupcake recipes.

Documents such as Inspire are circulated on a network of websites which are attracting large audiences. A recent survey suggested the ten leading websites linked to Al Qaeda have 125,000 registered members between them and may be attracting as many as 250,000 visits per day. The network is currently circulating a new English magazine produced by the Pakistan Taliban, which calls on supporters in the UK to murder teenage human rights campaigner Malala Yousufzai.

Another possibility, which will be considered by counter-terrorism officers, is that the minds of the killers of the British soldier were poisoned in a mosque or even in prison, an increasingly popular recruiting ground for groups linked to Al Qaeda.

It was not clear whether the men were on the intelligence radar of the security services or were ‘clean skins’, not known to police.

Some witnesses claimed the soldier was beheaded but there was no immediate confirmation of how he died. What is not in doubt is that he suffered a terrible knife attack. The head and the sword have a specific place in the rhetoric, heraldry and history of Islam. There is no shortage of passages in the Koran that jihadists can interpret to support their propaganda.

Chapter 47, Verse 4, is a favourite of those with evil intentions: ‘When you meet the unbelievers (in battle), smite their necks until you have crushed them . . .’

Jihadists have used this as justification for the scores of beheadings of non-believers in Iraq. When the word ‘behead’ is typed into Google, the search engine automatically suggests completing the sentence with ‘those who insult Islam’ - suggesting this is the most common search term beginning with that word.

The attack in Woolwich is one of several attempts to kill soldiers and MPs.

Student Roshonara Choudhry became a heroine in jihadi circles for stabbing MP Stephen Timms during his constituency surgery in Beckton, East London, in May 2010. Mr Timms survived.

A cell of terrorists from Luton was jailed last month at Woolwich Crown Court for discussing an attack on a Territorial Army barracks with a bomb attached to a remote controlled car.

Three weeks ago six men pleaded guilty in the same court to planning an attack on an EDL rally in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, using machetes and sawn-off shotguns and a home-made bomb.

Placards calling for anyone who insults the prophet Mohammed to be beheaded were waved during an angry protest in London in 2006. One man, Mizanur Rahman, who carried a placard that said ‘Behead those who insult Islam’, was later found guilty of inciting racial hatred.
