Fire Consumes Family Of Six In Port Harcourt

A family of six perished in an early morning inferno yesterday in Port Harcourt. Nobody could say what caused the fire but neighbors of the deceased family members said that the fire started at about 2pm. According to the landlord of the house, located at number 17, New Estate Road, Railway Quarters, they heard was a loud explosion. What followed next, he stated, were balls of fire. The residents claimed they ran out of their apartments in the confusion, adding that the explosion came from the apartment of the deceased family members. They said three boys, a girl and their parents were those consumed in the fire. They put the ages of the children at twenty two, seventeen, nine and seven years. According to a source, two other daughters of the deceased parents were not at home when the incident occurred. We gathered that the two other children relocated from home to write the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE. Neighbors said the father was a taxi driver while the wife was a petty trader. At press time, there was wailing in the compound. The landlord, who did not want his name in print, could not hold back tears, saying he wished lives were not lost in the fire. “If the fire had only consumed the building leaving the lives, we would all have been consoled. But losing a family of six is a heavy loss”, he lamented. Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe, who confirmed the incident, said she was still awaiting details.

I Represent Nigerians Not Only PDP – Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has hit
back at his critics within the Peoples Democratic Party who condemned
him for showering encomium on Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his
performance in Osun State.
Tambuwal, who spoke in Ilawe-Ekiti on Saturday after he was conferred
with the chieftaincy title of Bobagunwa by the Alawe of Ilawe, Oba
Ajibade Alabi, said he was not the speaker for the PDP alone but for
the whole country.

Tambuwal said, "I was criticised for commending Osun State governor's
performance but I will always speak the truth. If somebody is doing
well we have to commend such person, whether they are in the PDP,
Action Congress of Nigeria or in any party.

"I am not the speaker of a political party. I am the speaker for the
whole Nigeria. Governor Kayode Fayemi has also done well and he should
continue with the good work."

The speaker had in Osogbo during the launch of Opon Imo, an initiative
of Osun State governor lauded Aregbesola, who is a member of the
opposition ACN, for his achievements in the last three years.

The PDP Chairman in the state, Mr. Ganiyu Olaoluwa, had said
Tambuwal's comment was unbecoming of a national leader of the party.

Olaoluwa said the speaker's comment raised posers as to whether he "is
a member of the PDP or a supporter of Aregbesola."

But the speaker, who said he was undeterred by the criticisms, also
lauded Fayemi for his performance in Ekiti State since he assumed
office and urged the governor to do more.

Tambuwal has been rumoured to be associating with the opposition
raising speculation that he might be suspended by the PDP.

Fayemi, in his speech also described Tambuwal as a great leader who
should be emulated by others, adding that his leadership style had
stabilised the lower House.

The monarch also hailed Fayemi for his transformation of the state,
saying the state had not witnessed such transformation before.

He, however, appealed to the governor to fast-track his plan to build
a hospital in the town.

Alabi said, "We thank the state government for the plans to build a
modern hospital and a housing estate in Ilawe-Ekiti. It is our hope
that work will commence in earnest at the sites already given by the
community for the projects."

We May Drop Out Of School Soon – Fatai Rolling Dollar’s Children

Though death has stopped the beat of highlife singer, Fatai Olagunju,
popularly known as Rolling Dollar, his family wants his fans to keep
the tempo going, writes GBENGA ADENIJI
The location was the Millennium Estate, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos
residence of deceased highlife singer, Fatai Olagunju, otherwise
called Rolling Dollar. His two wives, Zainab and Serifat, some of his
children including Sikiru-who is the singer's 50-year-old first son,
wore a pensive mood as our correspondent walked into their home.

It was evident from their faces that they were yet to come to terms
with the reality of the death of the 86-year-old songbird, Rolling
Dollar, who breathed his last on June 12, coinciding with the 20th
anniversary of the acclaimed "fairest and freest" election in Nigeria.
The musician shot to stardom a few years back via a successful album,
Won Kere si Number Wa. But despite his fame, the family is worried
about the education of his younger children.

One of the children, Jamiu, told our correspondent that he was still
saddened by the death of his father, expressing uncertainty over his
future. He explained that he and his other siblings would miss their
father's pieces of advice.

The young Olagunju regretted that his late father was unable to fulfil
the promise he made to him concerning his education.

Jamiu stated, "Anytime he was around, he used to advise us on things
we should do and the ones we should avoid. He promised me that he
would make sure I studied up to university level. It is unfortunate
that when my father was making the promise, he did not know that he
would die this year."

He added that when the news of his father's death was broken to him,
the first thing he remembered was the promise he made to him,
regarding his university education.

"When I was told about his death, I remembered what he promised me. I
also thought about my education. It is my desire to be a singer like
my father but I want to go to school first. To honour my father, I
will take to music someday. He became popular as a highlife singer but
I want to be a hip-hop artiste," he added.

Rolling Dollar might have arrived on the big stage late in life but
his works were recognised by highlife lovers, music buffs and fellow
musicians. After his death, President Goodluck Jonathan was one of
many notable individuals who praised the good work of the late singer.
Zainab, who had just finished saying her prayers, told SUNDAY PUNCH
that she was yet to believe that her husband had left her forever. She
recalled that she married the musician after her first marriage
failed, adding that Rolling Dollar was yet to hit the stardom when he
married her.

She said, "I was staying with an aunt at Olorunsogo, Mushin area of
Lagos about 13 years ago when I met him. I used to see him pass by but
I did not know that he had interest in me. I was a bit sick when he
called me on a Sunday. He jokingly asked me if I would not mind
preparing Ramadan food for him because it was the fasting period. He
later noticed some patches at both corners of my mouth, indicating
that I had been sick. I told him I had used some drugs but he insisted
on buying some more for me."

Zainab said the musician did not even stop at that. According to her,
he also prepared rice and asked one of his children to take some to
her house.

She added, "I later learnt that the year he met me was exactly three
years after the death of his wife, who left three children behind. We
got married in 2001 and I promised to take care of the children for
him. His caring and honest nature drew me to him."

She further stated that the family was apprehensive of how to cater
for the children of the late artiste, who she said, did not leave
anything behind. Zainab appealed to his fans to stand by them at their
moment of grief.

Rolling Dollar's younger wife, Serifat, who said she bore a boy and a
girl for the deceased singer, also reiterated that their husband did
not leave any money to train their children.

When the highlife maestro was alive, Serifat said he cared so much for
the children and would do anything to make them happy. But his death
seemed to have caught her and the rest of the family unawares.

"Our husband did not leave any money. We hope his fans and government
will stand by us. The major challenge we are facing right now is how
to ensure that our children continue their education. I am a
businesswoman and I only survive on the little profit I make," she
stated.

Rolling Dollar's eldest child, Sikiru, who said he left the Nigerian
Educational and Development Council in 1996, told SUNDAY PUNCH that he
left his father at seven.

He stated that he was unhappy because of the inability to see his
father before he died, adding that he was also sick when he was
informed about his ill-health.

Sikiru said, "My father is one man that I like so much. I live at
Ikenne in Ogun State. I was so sad when I was told that he was ill
because I was also indisposed at the time. I thought that his sickness
was not something serious because he was a strong man until I was told
of the urgent need to see him. Apart from my sickness, I was also
broke but I pleaded that those around him, especially his wives,
should take good care of him. Immediately I was strong enough to move
around, I set out for Lagos to see him but it was unfortunate that he
died before I could reach him. I was on the road when I received the
call about his death."

Sikiru however eulogised his father's virtues, saying he was happy
that God gave the family a wonderful father who never maltreated his
children

"My father taught us never to misbehave, steal or look down on
anybody. These are some of the virtues I imbibed from him and I am
happy to say that the lessons are of great value to me. They have
assisted my journey in life."

Although 50-year-old Sikiru left his father a long time ago, he said
that he once followed him to a music show in Port Novo, Benin
Republic. He also said he visited him at regular intervals and that
during some of the visits, he watched his rehearsals.

"He was a great performer. He was lively on the stage despite his age
and his sense of humour during performances drew a large followership
to him," said Sikiru.

Folk singer, Segun Akinlolu, otherwise known as Beautiful Nubia,
described the late entertainer as a colourful and youthful character
who was always full of joy and life. Nubia said each time he met the
deceased artiste, he would give him a big hug and pray for him.

"He was full of appreciation for our music and called himself my
'Number One Fan.' He loved playing music and each time he climbed the
stage, he thrilled fans in a special way. Nobody wanted Rolling Dollar
to leave the stage. The last time I spoke with him was a couple of
months back. He appeared more subdued than usual but we discussed his
participation in this year's Eniobanke Music Festival. It's sad the he
will not be there but we shall celebrate him at the festival," Nubia
said.

The Oh! What A Feeling singer added that as Rolling Dollar was being
remembered by friends and fans, it was crucial for his legacy to be
protected and sustained. He stated that every artist is a blessing to
the society and their passing should always be met with positive
reflection and honest effort to continue their works and times in the
collective memory of all.

On Thursday, the eight-day Fidau prayer was held for Rolling Dollar
who was buried in his house located in Imaya, Ikorodu area of Lagos
State. As sympathisers continue to call on the family to commiserate
with them, how to secure the future of the children the artiste left
behind is now the major concern.

The late singer was said to have been wrongly diagnosed of malaria at
the first hospital where he was taken to. Another hospital in Surulere
initially reportedly diagnosed him with pneumonia. But after looking
into his medical history, especially the record from a US hospital
where he was first treated before returning home from his last trip a
few weeks ago, further diagnoses revealed he had cancer of the lungs.

Pa Dollar's many wives and final wish

The musician married five wives and had nine children. Two women who
were with him until his death gave birth to four of the children. The
eldest of the four children is aged 12 and he is in primary five. His
first son said the late singer pampered his children.

"My father would go to any length to ensure the comfort of his
children," he said, recalling how he showered him with gifts as the
only child of his mother.

He added that the late entertainer used to buy gifts from Domino
stores in Lagos whenever he was returning from a show a long time ago.
He also created time to take his children to his hometown in Ede, Osun
State, before his death. Sikiru said his father would fight any of his
wives that beat his children.

One of the wives, Zainab, said she could not fulfil the final wish of
the late singer. Narrating Rolling Dollar's frantic effort to see his
children before his death, Zainab said he begged her to bring the
children to him when he was at a hospital in Surulere, Lagos. She said
she was taking the children to him the next day when she was told that
he had passed on.

SUNDAY PUNCH also learnt that the late singer never allowed women to
cook his food till he died. One of his wives said he took that
decision to avoid being served a meal that didn't have the taste he
wanted.

His two wives said he was not a rich man in terms of monetary value,
but he was wealthy when one considers the name he left behind, his
prestige and character. They said he had no money in the bank but he
was always happy when he began to sing.

Two weeks before his death, our correspondent was at his Oko-Oba
residence to interview him. It was exactly three days after his return
from the music tour of the US and as he slept on a mat in his sitting
room, he told our correspondent that he was too sick to grant the
interview that was earlier scheduled for that day.

An Ogudu Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Friday struck out an application for the withdrawal of a N710, 000 fraud charge against a Choir Director of the Christ Embassy Church, Lagos. The police had on May 15 arraigned the director, Sunday Eboh, who allegedly defrauded another member of the church, David Egaifa, under false pretences of helping him to purchase a Toyota bus. Chief Magistrate Omolade Awope struck out the application when Egaifa exhibited ignorance of implications of the withdrawal. The complainant, who had earlier agreed with the accused to withdraw the suit, told court on Friday that he was not properly enlightened on the implications of withdrawing the case. Mr. Egaife made this known after the prosecutor, Corporal Adekemi Adeniran, told him that he would not be able to bring back the case once withdrawn. "Madam, it is during this section that I learnt I can't come back for the same case after withdrawal, but I was told that l can re-arrest Eboh if he refuses to pay my money. "My Lord, l don't want withdrawal again. I withdraw my application," Mr. Egaifa said. The choir director, who lives at No. 11, Church St., Ketu, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing. He had pleaded not guilty on arraignment, and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum. The prosecutor said that he committed the offences in February, 2012 at 12:30 p.m., at the Christ Embassy Church, Ketu, Lagos. "The accused told the complainant that his relatives are living in United Kingdom and that they frequently sent cars home for sale. "The complainant was not totally convinced, so he asked the accused to deposit his B.Sc certificate and his NYSC discharge certificate, to be turned to him when he brings the bus. After collecting the money, the accused ran away until last week when he turned up to demand for the certificates," Ms. Adeniran said. She said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing while Section 312 provides for 15 years imprisonment for obtaining by false pretences.

Funsho Williams’ Murder: Retired DIG Says Disorganised Room Indicates Scuffle Before Death

A retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Adebayo Adeoye, on Friday, said the police team that first arrived at the home of the late Funsho Williams met his room disorganised. Mr. Adeoye testified before Justice Adeniyi Adebajo of an Igbosere High Court in Lagos in the trial of six persons alleged to have murdered Mr. Williams, a gubernatorial candidate in Lagos. Mr. Williams was the People's Democratic Governorship candidate for the 2003 general elections. He was murdered on July 26, 2006 at his residence at Corporation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos. The accused are, Bulama Kolo, Musa Maina, David Cassidy, Tunani Sonani, Mustapha Kayode and Okponwasa Imariabie, all male. The retired DIG said that the disorganised room indicated that a scuffle occurred before Williams was murdered. Mr. Adeoye was examined by the Prosecution Counsel, O.A. Akin-Adesomojo. He said that he visited the scene of the crime on July 27, 2006, following a directive by the then Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero. He told the court that his team met a large crowd outside the deceased's residence and was led to the room where it found his body lying face down, hands tied and blindfolded, with blood on the floor. "We didn't touch anything because we were expecting forensics, but we kept looking for the point of entry, and moved to the adjacent flat which was empty. "While searching the flat, we saw footprints on the wall and a green rope. But we didn't conclude that it was the point of entry because we were not sure yet,'' the former police chief said. Mr. Adeoye told the court that he was an Assistant Inspector-General of police at the time of the incident. "Later in the day, the four policemen who were on duty on the night of the incident were arrested and their statements were taken before we handed over to the Force Headquarters, Abuja," he said. During cross examination, Defence Counsel, Agbara Okezie, asked the witness if any of the four arrested policemen was among the six accused. Mr. Adeoye said that he could not recollect their faces. Mr. Okezie also asked if the witness saw any mattress with footprints at the scene of the crime. He also inquired whether the two security guards in the house on the night of the incident were arrested. The former police chief replied: "I did not see any mattress with footprints and I don't know if any other security guards were arrested." After the cross examination, the prosecution counsel applied for adjournment to enable her produce another witness; but Mr. Okezie objected to the application. The defence counsel said that the court could not continue to wait for prosecution witnesses. However, Mr. Adebajo granted the application for adjournment, saying: "the court has to be flexible because of the nature of the charge. I will not rush them beyond their pace." "The further trial of this charge is adjourned to Sept. 26." The defendants were first arraigned on March 1, 2013 before Justice Adebajo on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder. The defendants, according to the charge, on or about July 27, 2006, at 34A, Corporation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, conspired to murder Mr. Williams. The offence contravenes Sections 316 and 324 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.

Gov Fashola stops his aides from organising elaborate 50th birthday party

Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola will turn 50 on June 28th. His
aides were planning an elaborate 50th birthday party but he asked them
to stop. He doesn't want to have an elaborate birthday at tax payers
expense. I love my governor. Read what he told City People below:

"By nature I am not a ceremonious person. I don't like all the noise
and partying. When I saw all the plans going on for my 50th, I said
no. If this is my day, then those who really love me should allow me
do it the way I want to. I have told my aides how I feel about this
whole 50th birthday celebration. I asked them if governors in other
countries don't have their birthdays and is it usually in such a loud
way and manner? If I do it my own way it won't cost me that much to
receive my visitors. I funded my 40th birthday when I was Chief of
Staff and it cost me so much. I am not quite sure I can do the same
now. As a Governor, it will cost me more. I am not sure I want to
spend that kind of money on parties. And to tell you the truth, the
idea that probably I will have a birthday at tax payers expense is
something that does not go down well with me, and it's only for 24
hours. So I am going to have a very quiet and simple day with close
friends and family.

We're not afraid of Spain - Eagles

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, stand-in captain Vincent Enyeama  and defender Elderson Echiejile  insist the Super Eagles have not given up hope of reaching the Confederations Cup semifinals. Diego Forlan's  strike brought to an end  Keshi's long 18-match unbeaten run in competitive games after the former  Manchester United forward got the winner as Uruguay beat Nigeria 2-1 in their Confederations Cup Group B game in Salvador, Brazil on Thursday. Uruguay and Nigeria are tied on three points in the group  but the South American champions  are   expected to beat underdogs Tahiti  on Sunday while the Eagles need to defeat  group leaders  Spain the same day to progress in the tournament. If Nigeria fail to end Spain's 24-match unbeaten run in international competitions, they will be  sent packing  from Brazil on Monday. La Roja, who  routed Tahiti 10-0 earlier on Thursday, only need a point to reach the last four. But Keshi said  Spain are beatable despite the European and  world champions' brilliant array of stars. "As for Spain, we can't wait to play them. Anything can happen. That's what makes this such a great game," Keshi told reporters in Salvador. "Everything is achievable," he said. "It depends how bad you want it." Sporting Braga's Echiejile said the team will go  all out for victory against Spain. "Despite the loss to Uruguay, we remain upbeat going into the game against Spain. We will go all out and fight," the 2013 Portuguese Cup winner, who has a  goal to his name in the tournament, wrote on his Twitter page on Friday. Goalkeeper Enyeama said the Eagles are not frightened by Spanish superstars, saying the Eagles are ready for the challenge. "We don't have to beat Spain convincingly, we just have to beat them," Goal quoted the 30-year-old, who won the Israeli Premier League with Maccabi Tel Aviv last season, as saying on Friday. " That's the most important thing. You never know what will happen (to Uruguay)  against Tahiti. "I really respect Spain, they have amazing players. Iniesta is magical for them and then you have Xavi. You like to play against these guys because you love watching these guys too. "But it's possible to win, because this is football. It will be a great experience for us. We can show our quality and we want to learn."

Nelson Mandela 'unresponsive and has not opened his eyes for days' as family is said to be discussing whether to withdraw medical treatment.

Contradicts reports Nelson Mandela is unresponsive and his immediate family is now discussing whether to withdraw treatment, it has been claimed. The 94-year-old has been in hospital for two weeks battling a recurring lung infection, but previous statements have indicated that Mr Mandela’s health is improving. According to a new source, Mr Mandela’s liver and kidney functions are down to 50 per cent and he has not opened his eyes for days. He has also had two recent procedures, one to repair a bleeding ulcer and another to insert a tube into his body, CBS News reports. This information indicates that Mr Mandela’s situation is much more much more serious than has been reported by South African authorities. In an interview last week, South African president Jacob Zuma said Mr Mandela was responding better to treatment. Marking the 49th anniversary of the sentencing of the former president to life in prison in 1964, last Wednesday Mr Zuma said: ‘We are very happy with the progress that he is now making following a difficult last few days.’ Following the interview with the ANC leader, a government spokesman told local radio that Mr Mandela remained in a 'serious but stable' condition. As recent as Thursday, one of Nelson Mandela’s grandsons said he hoped Mandela would be discharged shortly as his health was improving. ‘Positively we can say that he has been getting better and better each day and hopefully he'll be coming home soon,’ Ndaba Mandela told South African newspaper The Star. However, details about the night Mr Mandela arrived in hospital two weeks ago have emerged. According to CBS News, Mr Mandela went into cardiac arrest the night he was taken to Pretoria Hospital and had to be resuscitated. As Mr Mandela was driven to the hospital the ambulance suffered an engine failure and was forced to wait for over 40 minutes for a replacement. When the second ambulance arrived Mr Mandela had to be transferred - in winter temperatures- to a second vehicle which could have had an impact on his condition, according to a cardiologist interviewed by CBS. South African government officials have said ‘great care was taken to ensure that Mandela's health was not compromised and that his doctors were satisfied the former president suffered no harm.’ Mandela, who turns 95 next month, is being treated at a Pretoria hospital for a recurring lung infection. The hospital stay is his fourth since December and there is a growing realisation among South Africa's 53million people that they will one day have to say goodbye to the father of the 'Rainbow Nation' that Mandela tried to forge from the ashes of apartheid.

Fatai Rolling Dollar wanted to make a confession before he died -Widow

Zainab Olagunju, one of the wives of late highlife musician, Fatai
Rolling Dollars, says the veteran musician asked for her forgiveness
moments before he took his last breath. She told Saturday Beats that
the music legend did so because he knew he had offended her.

The widow bore two children for him -  – Jamiu and Mojeed – before his
death. They got married in 1999 and lived together in Mushin before
they eventually moved to Agege, both in Lagos State.

"On the day that he died, June 12, I got to the hospital and saw them
passing a drip into his body. The last thing he told me was that he
had offended me and my conscience. When I asked what he meant by that,
his voice faded out completely," she said.

The widow stated that she was sure he wanted to ask her to forgive him
for marrying another wife after her. She said that although she had
suspected he was unfaithful, he denied it anytime she confronted him.

Zainab said, "I feel he wanted to confess to me that he had married
another wife because he never told me about it before his death. I
used to ask him about it, but he always denied it. I feel he wanted to
tell me about Sherifatu Olagunju, his last wife.

"When I found out, I was not angry. As a human being, if you hear that
your husband is not faithful, you would be pained. I used to see her
with my husband but I did not know there was anything between them. He
always denied it but when we were burying him in Ikorodu and Sherifatu
saw how everything was, she calmed down and accepted me as her senior.
I also took her as my junior. Three days after the burial of my
husband, she came to live with me and we didn't fight. We see
ourselves more as sisters. "

Reminiscing on the last days of the juju maestro, she stated that his
sickness began when he travelled to America. She said that barely two
weeks after he travelled, Rolling Dollar called her to say that he was
ill. She asked him to pray for him so that he would not die in a
foreign land.

The widow said, "Baba went to America in March. After he had spent two
weeks, he called me and told me that he was in the hospital because he
was ill. When I asked what was wrong with him, he said that he had
pneumonia.

"Since he told me that, I always made it a point of duty to call him
just to check how he was faring. When his manager, Samson, took him on
the trip, nothing was wrong with him then. It got to a stage when I
called him and did not get any reply. I just kept praying. Later, one
of his kids that went with him called me to tell me that he was
feeling better.

"I told her to give him the phone, but she said she was not with him;
she said she would call me when she was with him. She eventually
called me and when I spoke with my husband, he told me to pray for him
not to die in a foreign land. Immediately he said that, I prayed
against that such would not happen in his life."

Zainab stated that when her husband returned and she saw him, she
broke down and started crying as he looked very frail. When she
noticed that he was not himself, she suggested taking him to the
hospital and he agreed.

At the hospital where he was admitted, instead of getting better, his
condition got worse. The guitarist, who walked into the hospital,
could no lonegr move around unaided after few days. She told Saturday
Beats that she had to put him on her back and carry him to the toilet
whenever he needed to relieve himself.

"When he got back from his trip on May 17, when I saw the way my
husband was looking, I burst into tears. I could not believe my eyes.
He told me that instead of crying, I should be thankful to God for
sparing his life.

"He was looking frail. On the third day of his arrival, I noticed he
was still not himself. I suggested that we go to the hospital and he
agreed. We went to Ahmadiyah Hospital around Sango in Ogun State. He
had been using the hospital before he travelled. When the doctor
checked him, he advised that he should be admitted. They admitted him
at the hospital and took good care of him.

"The only problem was that they never found out about the leg that he
kept complaining was paining him. The leg wasn't paining him when we
left home for the hospital. I just noticed that with the way he was
looking frail, his eyes were white and devoid of blood. He kept
complaining about his leg and how it was aching. At first, when we got
to the hospital, whenever he wanted to go to the toilet, he wobbled
while walking but five days after, he could not walk again.

"I would carry him on my back whenever he wanted to go to the toilet.
When the doctor had done a thorough check up and found nothing wrong
with him, they had to discharge him," the widow stated.

Ever since he got back from the hospital, he never left the house.
When his manager came to check him at home, he was shocked that her
husband's health hadn't improved. She said that when he asked FRD
about his health, all he said was that he was fine, only that his leg
was causing him serious pain. That was how the manager took him to the
hospital again.

"Again, the doctor said that he was going to admit him. We agreed and
I said I would be staying in the hospital with my husband. I said that
my only problem was how my children would be taken care of. There was
nobody around to take care of them. Whenever I looked at him, I got
scared because of the way he was breathing.

"He was not breathing normally, it was as if he was struggling to
breathe. On the third day of his admission to the hospital, his case
became worse; he could not hear anything till you put your mouth very
close to his ears. The doctor said that it was pneumonia and Baba also
refused to eat.

"A day before his death, when I told him I was going home to freshen
up, he asked me to bring the kids to see him in the hospital. I told
him that I could not because the hospital was far. I told him that
when he recovers, he would see his children at home. Shortly after, he
died. He was a very nice and accommodating man. I miss a lot about him
because we slept and ate together.

"If he travelled, I'd know he was out of town but with death, it means
I would never see him again except we meet in heaven. While he was
alive, he never joked with his kids because he used to say that the
kids that are meant to be his grandchildren are now his children. We
appeal to well-meaning Nigerians that as my husband is dead, they
should assist us with setting up a business so we can feed our kids,
and most especially, pay their school fees," she said.

The music legend's last wife, Sherifatu, however, told Saturday Beats
that she had dreamt of his death in 2009. But when she told her
husband, he dismissed it, stating that it meant he was going to live
longer.

She said, "When I heard about Baba's death, it pained me because it
just happened all of a sudden. Around 2009, I dreamt about him dying.
I called him and told him about it but he told me that such thing
would never happen to him.

"He said he would live long and we took it in good faith. And another
thing is that Baba was not the kind of person that could fall ill
easily. I even used to joke with him, asking him if he never used to
fall sick and he would tell me that it was not in his nature to be
indisposed. It wasn't until he travelled that I was called that he was
sick and we all expected that by the time he would come back, he would
be okay. It was the second day he came back that he was admitted to
the hospital."

The 31-year-old woman stated that the doctor had hinted her that FRD
was close to death when he was taken to the hospital but he did not
know when exactly he would die.

She said, "When I called the doctor to know how Baba was doing and
that I wanted to talk to him, he said I couldn't talk to him, that I
should come to his office. When I got to his office, he asked about my
identity. I told him I was his junior wife and he asked me how many
children I had. I told him two; then he asked me if I could take what
he wanted to tell me and I told him 'yes'.

"He said that the sickness affecting Baba had no remedy, that it
wasn't like fever that once someone uses drugs, it goes. But he didn't
disclose the real thing that was wrong with Baba to me. I asked the
doctor if the sickness was going to kill him and he said 'yes', but he
couldn't say if it would be this year or the next and that we should
just keep praying."

Sherifatu said that when Rolling Dollar died, his last child, a
three-year-old girl, Temitope, knew about it.

"The second day after that, Baba's younger brother called me that he
wanted to come to my house so that I would be able to take him to the
hospital. I called the doctor to know about his health immediately and
he told me he was getting better. So, I just went inside to have my
bath while his brother was still waiting in the living room. It was
shortly afterwards that we got a call on the phone and his brother
suddenly screamed.

"It was the noise that made me rush out of the bathroom. I asked him
what happened, but he refused to tell me. But with the way he shouted,
I knew something was wrong, as if Baba was dead. When he finally told
me, I was shocked but I had to comport myself. I got dressed and we
started calling all the people we needed to call to inform them about
his death.

"That was what I was doing when Baba's last child, Temitope, who is
only three years old, came to meet me and said, 'My mummy, you are
crying'. I told her I was not crying and then she told me she knew why
I was crying, it was because Baba had died. I asked her how she knew
and she didn't talk again. It was at that moment that my sister and I
got dressed and left the house for the hospital," Sherifatu said.

The widow said that the intelligence of the little girl often
surprised her and her husband. Often times, she said, her husband
would thank God for giving him such a brilliant child.

"It amazed me that my little child understood everything that was
going on. It was something we already knew about because she had
always been like that since. Even Baba then used to ask how she learnt
how to talk like that because her behaviour was too matured for her
age. Everything she did was always a thing of happiness to Baba
because he was always grateful to God that he could give him a
brilliant child like her," she said.

Taking a trip down memory lane, in 2009 to be exact, Sherifatu said
that she met Baba when he came to buy some goods from her. She said
that with the death of Baba, she would not re-marry.

The 31-year-old mother said, "I met Baba where I had a shop then and
we had a discussion. It was funny because I never thought I would be
privileged to talk to such a person. Besides, I didn't even know he
was famous because I never saw him on television. I just knew he used
to come to my place to buy goods from me and I just saw him as an
elderly person that wanted to buy goods and needed my assistance to
his car. "But then, he told me that he didn't come with his car, that
his house was not far from my shop. So he kept coming every time. It
was on one of his visits to my shop that he said it like a joke that
he liked me o, and that he would like to marry me and take care of me.

"But I declined and told him immediately that I could not marry a man
with a wife. But he insisted that he was going to take care of me. It
was from then that I agreed with him and decided to marry him. In
2002, we started getting close and I got pregnant for him. Since then,
we got together. There is nothing more to do after Baba's death other
than to look for a good way to take care of the children that he left
behind.

"I'm not going to re-marry. I just want to sit down and take care of
my children because their education is very important. That's what I
want to do for Baba."

Boko Haram Attacks MOPOL Training Base In Borno

Fleeing members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, on Thursday, attacked Limankara village, killing scores of people. Among those killed was the pastor of a local church. Limankara, which is a border community between Borno and Adamawa, was said to be a safe haven for residents of Gwoza in Borno, who fled from the ongoing military onslaught on members of Boko Haram. It is a Mobile Police training base. The refugees were said to be waiting for the dust in Gwoza to settle down before going back to their homes. Though the report could not be confirmed because telephone services were cut in the three North-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, the Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mr. Mark Lipdo, said he heard about the incident from an authoritative source. Lipdo said, “Reports say that Limankara community, at the Borno/Adamawa border, was attacked by men of Boko Haram yesterday (Thursday). Sources said there were people killed, including a pastor.”

House-help, Lover, Fake Soldiers Arrested For Robbing Master Of $100,000

Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos have
arrested a female house help who allegedly connived with her boyfriend
and two fake soldiers to rob her master of over 100,000 Dollars.

The 23 year-old house help, Adaeze Ijeoma, allegedly sneaked into her
master's bedroom located in Maryland, Lagos, last month, after he
traveled out of the country. Unsure of where to keep the foreign
currency, she reportedly took it to her boyfriend, one Onyebuchi Uche,
only for him to flee with the money, leaving Adaeze in doubt.

On his part, Onyebuchi , who has been jobless for years, rushed to
Alade market, Ikeja where he changed some of the dollars to naira and
thereafter, deposited the sum of N8 million in two banks. He
thereafter, told operatives at SARS that he also bought a car; 'End of
Discussion' and a plot of land in an undisclosed area where he had
started molding blocks for building.

Determined to get her own share of the loot from him, betrayed Adaeze
was said to have confided with one of her relatives identified simply
as Nnamdi to help retrieve the money from her estranged lover.

Nnamdi and two other persons clad in Military camouflage reportedly
stormed Maryland last week where on spotting Onyebuchi, bundled him
inside his new vehicle and took him to a hotel in Mende area of Lagos,
where they reportedly tortured him and forced him to disclose where he
kept the money. They reportedly managed to get the sum of N6.5 million
from two separate banks where Onyebuchi kept the money, including the
new car he bought.

However, just when Adaeze was contemplating on what to do with her own
share of the recovered loot, an eight man robbery gang reportedly
stormed her master's home, where an unspecified amount including his
phones and other valuables were carted away.

The robbery case was reported at SARS after which Adaeze and two other
persons were arrested. Although she denied having a hand in the recent
robbery, she however, disclosed her role in the theft of 100,000
Dollars.

In this interview with Crime Guard, she said: " I am from Akri village
in Ogbaru Local Government area of Anambra State. I left the village
in 2010, after my secondary school education in search of greener
pastures in Lagos, where I started working as a house-help for Chief
Uche and was paid the sum of N10,000 monthly. I lived in the same
apartment with chief and to be honest to him, he has treated me as a
member of the family.

"I met my boyfriend Onyebuchi after being lonely for a while in 2011.
I was tempted to steal my boss's money and gave it to my boyfriend to
keep so that we can start our own life. I gave him because he promised
he would marry me. I stole the money so that we can, at least, get a
lease of life when married. I believed he would use it wisely because
he has always had plans for the future.

"But I began suspecting foul play after he stopped picking my calls .
When I went to where he lives in Mende, I was told he usually came
home late. Later, those who know us told me he started driving a car.
That was when I contacted my uncle, Nnamdi to help retrieve the money
from him. On the day, he was to go with his two soldier friends, I
waited at Mende for Onyebuchi and when I sighted him, I pointed him to
them and left for home immediately. After he was tortured, he called
me on the phone that he was sick and when I went to see him, he said
some robbers stole the money from him and even battered him to stupor.

"I swear, I do not know anything about the other robbery operation in
the house. The robbers came armed and forced me to take them round the
house. They only got some money in the guest room and took my master's
Black berry phone, his gold wrist watch and other things. They also
took my phone but left it at the backyard. I did what I did out of
love for my boyfriend, not knowing he would betray me. Now he has
fled, leaving me to bear the consequences alone, without having a
taste of the money, " she stated in tears.

On his part, Nnamdi claimed he was once a military personnel but
resigned on his return from a foreign mission where he got the sum of
N2 million. Surprisingly, Nnamdi was discovered to be an in-law to
Chief Uche. "I am from Akaokwa village, in Ideato North Local
Government area, Imo State and the complainant is married to my
father's sister. I used to sleep in their house any time I came to
Lagos to sell palm oil and at times, I spent one month.

"When Adaeze told me about the money, I threatened I was going to tell
her boss. But on second thought, I thought if I got the money, I could
use it to enrich myself. I then contacted Chima, my friend who is now
at large. It was Chima who contacted a soldier who initially gave his
name as Corporal Humphrey. It was later we discovered he was a
dismissed soldier. We lodged at Tropicana Hotel in Mende Maryland
,where we took Onyebuchi to. I was in full Army uniform while Ajaghe
my other friend, was wearing a camouflage cap, pretending to be
soldiers.

"We tied him to a ceiling fan and beat him in order to force him to
tell us where he kept the money. We seized his car. And ordered him to
transfer the N2.4 million he said was in First Bank and N5.5 million
in Fidelity bank to my account for easy withdrawal. We used ATM card
to withdraw the money for one week from one of the banks while we
withdrew the rest from separate branches of the other bank. At the
end, I gave Onyebuchi's car to Chima to keep and N500,000 to Ajaghe ,
while I kept the rest, with the hope of giving some to Adaeze and
keeping the rest", he said, adding that he knew nothing about the
robbery operation at Chief Uche's apartment.

The Commander, SARS, Mr Abba Kyari, said the suspects would be charged
to court while efforts were still on to arrested other fleeing members
of the gang.
