court_logo_2_1
Former Nigerian Olympian, Ambrose Monye, has appeared before a South African court maintaining is innocence in the killing of a South African woman, Chanelle Henning.

On Monday, Monye said he did not give any instruction to anyone to get her assassinated.
“My Lord, I never gave instructions to anybody to carry out any illegal action,” Monye said.
Vanguard reports:

As the State completed cross-examination of the in alleged link in the murder of Henning, the state Prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, in final submissions in trial of Monye in the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, said  that he believed the accused was involved in Henning’s murder.

Henning, 26, died in a shooting in Faerie Glen on Nov. 8 2011, shortly after dropping her child at a crèche.

Monye and his co-accused, Andre Gouws, pleaded not guilty to the five-count charge of  conspiracy to murder Henning.

The state alleged that Monye and Gouws conspired with former Policeman Gerhardus du- Plessis and Willem Pieterse in the murder of Henning.

Du Plessis and Pieterse are serving 18 years imprisonment after confessing their roles in the murder.
Nel said Gouws wanted someone killed and he asked Monye to assist him.

He narrated how Monye met Pieterse who agreed to carry out the killing.

Nel said Monye introduced Gouws to Pieterse and Du Plessis on Nov. 2, 2011.

He said Monye insisted that the two should follow Gouws to Henning’s house and workplace.
Monye however, denied any involvement in the conspiracy and muder.

“They followed Gouws willingly,” Monye told the court.

Nel also explained how Pieterse and Du Plessis failed to kill Henning days before she was murdered, and how Monye arranged a meeting at Romans Pizza in Sunnyside, Pretoria, to iron out the problem.

“My lord there was nothing like that. I never arranged a meeting for such things,” Monye said.
Monye also denied threatening Du Plessis when he allegedly said that he was no longer taking  part in the murder.

Nel referred to cell phone records showing calls between Monye and Pieterse and between Monye and Gouws on the day of the murder.

He said Monye demanded payment for the murder on Nov. 8, 2011, and Gouws withdrew R44.000 (about N 792,000) from his bank account on that same day.

He said few days later R31.500 (about N 558,000) was deposited into Monye’s account.

Nel said this was payment for the murder.

“My lord, I never demanded any money from anybody,” Monye said.

With conclusion of cross-examination by the prosecution, Daan Mostert, counsel for Gouws, will question Monye at next hearing on July 26

Ramadan Talk: Why Fasting Is Prescribed Unto You

wpid-Holy-Ramadan-Fasting1.jpeg

Glory be unto Allah, the Lord of the worlds. We thank Him for His grace and mercy having to witness another Ramadan. Whosoever Allah guides cannot be misled and whoseoever Allah misleads cannot be guided. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah with no associate and Muhammad is His prophet. May the peace and blessings continue to abide with Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w).

Allah has assigned to us the season of goodness in which the rewards for good deeds are not only in multiple folds but also the bad deeds are blooted out. In it, there are opportunities for repentance and forgiveness. Whoever uses the time to purify himself will be spiritually cleansed; he will attain success in this world and hereafter. That is one of the blessings of Allah in the month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is a pillar of Islam in which the Glorious Qur’an was revealed. In the month, we have a night that is better than a thousand months. It means fasting in Ramadan is equvalent to fasting in 10 months. This is also not to mention the blooting out of sins of a repentant Muslim.

It is a period of worship during the day and better part of the night. We were created to worship Him alone. Obedience to His ordernances is as important as worshipping Him. One of the greatest act of worship is fasting in the month of Ramadan as He commanded us in Quran 2: 183-185.

But why do we have to fast? According to the above verses of the Qur’an, Allah enjoined us to fast so that we can gain piety (taqwa). Any one who is able to gain more taqwa will intensify in other acts of worship; will shun or think less of this material world; will always do what is good, kind to people irrespective of class or creed and will gain nearness to Allah. That is the quintessence of fasting.
In doing this, we also need to know what we should do and what we should refrain from in this glorious month.

Fasting is not only about abstinence from food and drink, but also going closer to Allah by doing what you are enjoined to do and shunning those things that will vitiate your fast and render the whole exercise useless. Come to think of it, what is the need to deny yourself from the food and pleasure of life, feeling the pangs of hunger and yet with the availability of food or the means to get same, you chose to fast only to be rendered useless on account of ignorance or sheer negligence.

One of the virtues of fasting reported in an authentic hadith is that Allah has chosen for Himself and will reward without measure is fasting. “Except for fasting whihc is for my sake, I will reward greatly.” Fasting is one of the greatest deed Allah required from us even with promise that the supplication of a fasting person will not go unanswered.

The fasting person will also have the privileged of intercession by his fast on the day of judgement. A sahee hadith says: “O’ Lord, I prevented him from his food and physical desires during the day, so, let me interceed for him.”

Fasting is also a strong protection and a fortress that keeps a person safe from hell fire. One hadiths clearly says that whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will move his face from a distance of seventy years from fire.

Rivers Speaker Otelemaba Amachree

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State today personally foiled an attempt to impeach the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, news website,SaharaReporters is reporting.

The speaker, Otelemaba Amachree, had convened a session of the legislature in order to amend certain portions of the Rivers State budget. The session followed a prolonged crisis in the state caused by alleged schemes by President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to impeach Mr. Amaechi, who is deemed an impediment to the president’s ambition to seek a second term.

Two lawmakers loyal to Mr. Amachree told Saharareporters that the speaker sensed there was trouble in the air after he sent letters summoning members to today’s session.“The speaker now sent a message to the state commissioner of police and the brigade commander and leader of the Joint Task Force to ask for security to enable the house [to] sit,” said one of the lawmakers.

The other legislative source added that, unknown to the speaker, five renegade members of the assembly loyal to President Jonathan had met with the commissioner of police overnight and arranged to come prepared to impeach the speaker. “When we arrived at the state assembly today, we were surprised to see a huge number of military men and well armed policemen,” said the source.

The report said trouble soon started as a member of the house, Evans Bapakaye Bipi, representing Ogu/Bolo constituency arrived with thugs, pounced on the house leaders, Michael Chinda and Chidi Lloyd, while the police and the military kept their distance. When Governor Amaechi heard of the fracas and the refusal of the police and members of the JTF to intervene, the report said, he rushed to the house with his aides and armed escorts and succeeded in rescuing members of the house loyal to him.

As the governor and majority of the legislators were leaving the site of the mayhem, they discovered that five renegade members of the house empowered by President Jonathan had seized the mace. They then ran back to retrieve the mace from the minority group, our sources said.

The video below captured attack led by a member of the Rivers State house of assembly in an attempt to impeach the speaker of the house. The Speaker and 26 other members of the house are loyal to the governor, Rotimi Amaechi, while five others led by Evans Bapakaye Bipi, representing Ogu/Bolo constituency are loyal to President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience.

Mr. Bipi here is seen arriving the house with thugs, he later attacked the camera crew before breaking into the chambers to attack his colleagues.

Liverpool Reject Arsenal’s £30m Bid For Suarez

suarez

The Gunners’ first concrete offer of £30m for Uruguay international Luis Suarez has been turned down by his employers with the fee reportedly falling well short of Liverpool’s expectations.

Arsenal has been actively seeking out a striker to give the squad much needed offense. The Gunner recently put in a request for Suarez in a bid to bolster its frontline for the coming season.
Rejected bid

Sources according to latinospost.com report that Arsenal’s bid of approximately £30million for the Uruguayan striker is considered too low by Liverpool who reportedly want £50 million for the striker, reports futaa.com.

Suarez has had a controversial season that caused many to wonder if the Uruguayan had played his final game at Anfield. Suarez was suspended for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic during a match back in April. Suarez has stated an interest in remaining with his current club.
Trophy less streak

It will be interesting to see if Arsenal, who are looking to end its trophyless streak, bucks the money-saving trend in pursuit of the Uruguayan international who scored 23 times in 33 league games last season.

10 Ways To Protect Your Online Transactions

online tra

The increase in the number of professional hackers has proved that the essence of online banking security in the 21st century cannot be overemphasised. In the light of this, computer technologists and financial analysts say that sending your bank transactions and surfing across the web can be as hazardous as piloting a ship through pirate-infested waters.
Below are 10 ways to protect your online transactions, according to experts:

1. Always use a dedicated personal computer

Analysts recommend that businesses should always use a dedicated PC for online transactions. They note that cyber-criminals have adopted measures of writing malware to generate fraudulent Automated Clearing House and wire transfers.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Nath Concept Limited, a computer service firm, Mr. Jonathan Ikechukwu, notes that for a cyber-criminal to successfully hijack ones transactions, the criminal would first insert the malware onto one or more of the victim’s company’s computers.
According to experts, infecting a computer usually requires less effort if computer is regularly connected to the internet or used for sending and receiving emails. The American Bankers Association, analysts say has recommended commercial banking customers should carry out all online banking activities from a stand-alone, hardened and completely locked down computer system from which e-mail and web browsing are not possible.

2. Find web addresses on your PC by yourself

Analysts say internet links in email messages, text messages, instant messages, or pop-up ads can take you to websites that look legitimate but are not. They advise that when one wants to visit a website, he should type the address himself or should use his own bookmark or favourite, especially when it has to do with financial transactions.

3. Watch out for signs that guarantee the safety of your information

Before entering sensitive data on a web page, always watch for signs that say your information is safe. Although this can be manipulated by hackers, you should try to know the kind of sign which the organisation you are seeking to know about may put up online.
Experts say that you should ensure that the site uses encryption, a security measure that helps protect your data as it traverses the Internet. Some encryption signs include a web address with https (“s” stands for secure) and a closed padlock beside it. They say the lock at time might be in the lower right corner of the window.

3. Lock down your computer when necessary

Financial analysts note that “locked down” computing creates a secure channel between your personal computer and your bank’s server. The former President, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Nzekwe, notes that it is important for individuals to lock down their systems. IBM’s ZTIC is one hardware solutions, which experts say can be used to secure online transactions.

4. Partner your bank on dual control

They say that one could also partner their respective banks to establish “dual control” over ones account. Once this safeguard is in place, two individuals from your organisation will need to log on and authorise any transaction. With dual control in place, a hacker would need to breach two computer accounts in order to commit a fraudulent transaction, analysts at About.com say.

5. Subscribe to receiving alerts from your bank

It is also vital that you request your bank to send email confirmations or text messages of online transactions to you. This will provide you with an early warning of any fraudulent activity on your account.

6. Your password must be strong

Experts advise individuals who carryout online transactions to be cautious of their passwords and to always change it often, stressing that ones’s password must not be shared. According to them, strong passwords are the first line of defence in ones online domain.

7. Check your account balance often

It is advisable for individuals to always check their balance daily if possible. If you catch a fraudulent transaction at the end of a business day, you may be able to cancel it before any funds are transferred.

8. Don’t “friend” strangers

According to Ikechukwu, it has been proven that hackers could use information obtained from social network sites of friends to breach or break into organisations sites. The same techniques could be used to hack into online banking accounts. They say that most people easily drop their guard on Facebook and other social network sites. This, they note, is because of the belief that friends are to be trusted, even if not completely. “Scammers are watching,” Nzekwe says. “They know that once you are on some of these social websites, your guard goes way down and they may capitalise on that.”

9. Save financial transactions in your home computer

Never pay bills, bank, shop, or do other financial business on a public or shared computers or devices such as laptops or mobile phones that are on public wireless networks. The security is unreliable.

10. Make good use of your common sense

The ability to watch out for scams is another factor of making good use of one’s senses. Experts advice people involved in online transactions to be wary of shady deals that sound too good to be true. They say one should often neglect alerts from ones “bank” that his account will be closed unless he takes some immediate action, stressing that notices of lottery won should be ignored. “In fact you should refuse to meet in person for a local transaction,” Nzekwe advises.
According to analysts, these messages, whether sent through the internet or through mobile phones, are designed to entice victims to visit criminal websites where fraudsters can easily collect the data of their victims.

NFF Suspends Four Football Clubs Following 79-0, 67-0 Results

nff

The Nigeria Football Federation has placed indefinite suspensions on four clubs after two scandalous results of 79-0 and 67-0 in a promotion play-off.

In promotion play-offs into the Nigeria Nationwide League, the lowest tier of Nigeria’s domestic league, on Monday, Plateau United Feeders beat Akurba FC 79-0, while Police Machine FC demolished Babayaro FC 67-0. The incredible results forced the NFF to suspend the teams.

All the teams were involved in promotion play-offs in which the winners would qualify to play in Nigeria Nationwide League Division 3.

Before this, Ghanaian clubs had the record of such scandalous goals but they didn’t score more than 25 goals.

Chairman of the NFF organising committee, Mike Umeh, who is also NFF First Vice President, said he was alarmed when informed and promptly directed that the four teams at the centre of the scandal be grounded, pending further sanctions on all involved.

“It is unacceptable. This is a scandal of huge proportions. The four teams involved are suspended immediately and indefinitely, pending further sanctions. We will investigate this matter thoroughly and get to the bottom of it,” Umeh said on Tuesday.

NFF director of competitions, Mohammed Sanusi, assured that the organising committee would mete out severe sanctions on all persons and institutions indicted by the investigation.

“For now, that centre is suspended. The teams involved, their players and officials, match officials, coordinator and anyone found to have played some role in this despicable matter would be severely dealt with,” Sanusi said.

I Made ‘Successful’ Mistakes As President —Obasanjo

wpid-Obasanjo-Says....jpeg

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday declared that he made “successful” mistakes as Military Head of State and civilian president.

Obasanjo, who ruled the country between 1976 and 1979 as a military head and between 1999 and 2007 as a civilian President, however, took responsibility for all his actions.
He spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State during the 50th anniversary lecture to commemorate the call to the Bar of Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).

A civil war veteran and former Chief of Staff of the 3rd Marine Commando Division, Nigeria Army, Gen. Alabi Isama (retd), had recently accused Obasanjo of committing numerous blunders during his reign in government.

Obasanjo said, “One mistake I made that turned out to be successful was when I was looking for somebody to give leadership of the University of Lagos to and I chose Babalola. Some people said I made a mistake but it turned out to be a successful mistake.

“My mistakes as people say were mostly in appointments. I appointed the UNILAG Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor and the university became the best. The Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor that I appointed were acknowledged as the best at the time.

“The mother of all the mistakes was that the exposure and involvement of Babalola in the affairs of UNILAG led to the establishment of the Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti.

“If you have not seen ‘instant wonder’, go to ABUAD. Babalola used his experience as the Pro-Chancellor of UNILAG to build what today is the best and fast growing private university in the country.”

Obasanjo, who inaugurated the extension of Babalola’s Emmanuel Chambers on the occasion, said, “There are many Nigerians, but, there are not many good Nigerians of Babalola’s sterling qualities.”
Solicitor-General of the Federation, Ahmed Abdulahi, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan, described Babalola as a product of courage, perseverance, determination and humility.

The Guest Speaker, retired Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, while delivering a lecture entitled, ‘The future of Law in Nigeria’, stressed the need to improve legal education in the country.

He said, “Our legal education should be re-invigorated and made more robust. For instance, we should begin to encourage inclusion of Comparative Law in every aspect of our legal education.
“We can only neglect the history of the principles of the common law at a disadvantage. Our law faculties should be fully equipped with the access to jurisprudence and decisions of other jurisdiction
to protect our laws.

“We delude ourselves in this country if we believe that, we can be a great nation without a great legal system. The path to the greatness of our nation is through a reliable, efficient, trustworthy and value-driven legal system.”

Former Pro-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Chief Wole Olanipekun, (SAN) described Babalola as a reformer, revolutionary and educationist who contributed to national and legal development.

Governors Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo); Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) and a former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni among other eminent personalities attended the ceremony.

SURE-P Generates 116,000 Jobs Nationwide -FG

sure p1

The Federal Government, Tuesday, said Community Services Women and Youths Employment, CSWYE, project of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), has generated no fewer than 116,000 jobs across the country.
Speaking through the Minster of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu in Abuja, the government said a total of N3, 183,820,150.00 had been paid to date as stipends to beneficiaries of CSWYE project of the SURE-P across the federation.

A statement by Olowookere Samuel, Assistant Director (Press) in the Labour ministry, said Chief Wogu spoke during the inaugural meeting of the inter-ministerial consultative committee of the CSWYE Project of SURE-P.

According to Wogu; “monthly stipends are consistently, being paid to beneficiaries. To date a total of N3, 183,820,150.00 has been paid as stipends to beneficiaries across the Federation.”
He noted that the project which started with 14 pilot states with 300 to 1000 beneficiaries had employed a total of 116,000 beneficiaries, saying “the project started in fourteen pilot states with 300 to 1000 beneficiaries in each, but has now scaled up to 3000 in each state and FCT. To date, a total of 116,000 beneficiaries (74,863 males 41,137 females and including 5,432 people living with disabilities) are deployed in 34 states and FCT, working on a total of 5,761 projects/services spread across 10,707. We project to engage 2000 more beneficiaries per state, including the FCT before the year runs out to attain the 185,000 set annual target.”

In a related development, Chief Wogu while briefing the House of Representatives Committee on Labour, Productivity and Employment, on the implementation status of the CSWEY project, called on the legislators to pass the amendment proposal to the 2013 budget as presented by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said this would facilitate the sustenance of the project without which the second phase of the CSWYE project cannot be implemented and payment of stipends to existing beneficiaries would not be sustained.

“The major challenge of the project is non-approval of the budgetary provision in full to sustain the payment of stipends to beneficiaries. This is of great concern as any delay in payment of stipends results in ripples of crisis by participating youths in the states”

In his remarks, the Chairman House Committee on Labour, Productivity and Employment, Essien Ayi, said: “In my state, Cross River State, we are aware of the activities of the CSWYE project of SURE-P. I heard that they have started paying them because it is an E-payment system done directly to the account of the beneficiaries”.

He added that, the purpose of inviting the minister was for him to come and shed more light on the activities of the project in order to guide the committee on its oversight function which is due to commence soon.

35yr Old Nursing Mother Commits Suicide After Baby Dedication

A 35-year-old woman, identified as Ejobosele Okoruwa. has committed suicide in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government, Edo State, few hours after dedicating her three months old baby in a church.
Ejobosele dedicated her baby on Sunday, while she killed herself in the early hours of Monday.

Her lifeless body was found dangling from the ceiling with the wrapper she allegedly used to hang herself.

Husband of the deceased, Okoruwa told journalists that he slept in the sitting room with two of his children, while his wife slept in the bedroom with their eldest daughter and the baby.

Okoruwa said it was shouts from his daughter around 2am that woke him up, adding that he rushed inside the room only to see his wife dangling from the ceiling.

He said recent behaviour of his wife indicated that she was depressed, but it did not occur to him that she would take her own life.

He said, “I usually sleep in the parlour with two of our children and it was not different that day. My wife slept in the bedroom with our eldest daughter and the baby.

“Around 2am, my daughter started shouting from the bedroom. I rushed inside, thinking that she was having a nightmare, but I was shocked to see the lifeless body of my wife dangling from the ceiling. She had hung herself.

“She had been exhibiting some strange behaviour recently. One time she would be moody; the next, she will just be looking at one direction. When you call her she would not respond.

“I tried to know if she had any problem bothering her, but she said she was okay. There was a time she told my eldest daughter to take care of the children that she would be going away. I thought she was abandoning the marriage. I pleaded and she promised to stay. She equally complained of some health problems. I asked her to go for test which she did.”

The Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Esan West, Mr. Akpoko Omuohowo, who confirmed the incident, said the police were still investigating.

Chaining up of the Devils in Ramadan.

It was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon
him) said: "When Ramadaan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened,
and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up."
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3277; Muslim, 1079. According to al-Nasaa'i:
"The most evil jinn are chained up."

This does not mean that the devils have no influence at all, rather it
indicates that they become weaker in Ramadaan and are not able to do
what they are able to do at times other than Ramadaan.

It may be interpreted as meaning that the ones who are chained up are
the most evil devils, not all of them.

Al-Qurtubi said: If it is said, how come we see many evil actions and
sins being committed in Ramadaan, for if the devils were chained up,
that would not happen?

The answer is that (evil actions) are reduced on the part of those who
fast meeting all the conditions of fasting and paying attention to the
etiquette of fasting.

Or some of the devils - namely the most evil ones - are chained up,
not all of them, as previously mentioned in some reports.

Or it may mean that evil actions are reduced in Ramadaan, which is
something that we can see. Even though evil actions happen in
Ramadaan, they are less than at other times. Even if all of the devils
were to be chained up, that does not mean that no evil action would
happen, because there are other causes of evil action besides the
devils, such as evil souls, bad habits and the human devils.

Musali Mohammed Al-Mujamaie of Iraq, who is a father of 16 children,

long-awaited event as the wedding of his grandchildren had been
postponed several times so they can get married the same time as
him."I am very happy to get married with my grandchildren, and I feel
like a 20-year-old again," Al-Mujamaie said.
Al-Mujamaie had raised his 16 children in his hometown of Gubban with
his first wife. His first wife,
who died three years ago, had been with him for 58 years.

Baddo Lee came straight out of his Lee Temple and has colossally grown
into one of Nigeria's biggest Rap artistes. Olamide has been feeding
us with hits after hits and in the process, upgraded his brand from
budding underground Hip-Hop act to a swanky Rapper who is now a
household name.

This is what Sesan Adeniji, the publisher of Mystreetz magazine, had
to say about their new issue:

'With the way the Nigerian music industry has continued to evolve,
sometimes, one needs to ask the question, what if? What if Fela hadn't
let go of his tussle with Orlando Julius for the ownership of highlife
jazz to discover Afro-beat? What if Sir Shina Peters had been content
with the music genre he tussled for with Segun Adewale and he hadn't
pioneered Afro Juju? What if Prince Nico Mbarga hadn't sang 'Sweet
Mother' and Tu Face never recorded 'African queen'? The answers are
not far fetch. Nigerian music wouldn't have been widely recognized and
respected as it is today without the record set by these brave hearts
who took the road less travelled and refused to join the bandwagons.

We live in an industry where the copycat syndrome is the order of the
day and the few who dare to do something different are hardly
encouraged from the onset except when they beat the odds to
breakthrough. We at Mystreetz magazine have always stood out to report
what is different and Just like we once projected with 'Olamide's eye
on the Rap throne' which was the first time he graced the cover of
Mystreetz magazine. Musically, his stock has risen ever since, so much
that he became the first artiste to grace the magazine's cover for the
second time. To us, he is one of the few Nigerian artistes that
followed the road less travelled. Determined to live his dream driven
by rapping in his mother's tongue. He is arguably, the only artiste
that has become so successful after ticked off as a replica. So the
Question now is What is workinng for Olamide?

Nigerian writer Tope Folarin wins Caine writing prize

This is delightful news. Two Nigerians have won the prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing two years in a row. Last year, Nigerian writer, Rotimi Babatunde, won the prize for his story Bombay's Republic - a book about Nigerian soldiers who fought in the Burma campaign during World War II. And this year, another Nigerian has won. His name is Tope Folarin, a US-based writer. He won the prize for his story - Miracle - a short story set in an evangelical Nigerian church in Texas.
Tope, who was shortlisted with three other Nigerians and a Sierra Leonean for the prize, received $15,000 at an event that held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Congrats to him.

Different Faces Of Corporate Begging In Lagos

As the economic recession bites harder, some residents daily devise new means of begging, SAMUEL AWOYINFA reports

Apart from the familiar physically-challenged people that are traditionally known to beg alms in the city, other shades of beggars are beginning to emerge. Call them corporate beggars, if you like.

This class of beggars operates on an individual basis and they seem to pick their targets by some traits they see in them.

It could be the kind of cars they drive, the neighbourhood where they live or the kind of clothes they wear.

These corporate beggars operate in and around offices, churches, shopping malls, road sides and familiar neighbourhoods.

Investigations by our correspondent reveal that they come in two categories: those that are not ready to work but are looking for an easy way to earn a living; and those who lost their jobs and have relatives to take care of.

It is also common to see women, normally backing their babies, often well dressed, also asking for financial assistance at bus stops, especially in the morning and evening, to either buy baby food or as transport fare.

From CMS, Victoria Island, Lekki to Obalende, Ikeja and Yaba, these beggars operate without scruples.

With the presence of the first category, it becomes difficult for kind-hearted Lagosians who might want to help those in the second category to do so. The reason for this is that the potential Good Samaritans may think the beggars are all the same.

However, those who are moved by the stories of woe of either of the classes demonstrate kind gestures by giving them money.

Some of the beggars complain of being stranded and not having enough money for transportation to their homes after visiting imaginary relations in far away locations.

Others wave medical reports or drug prescription lists at their ‘victims’, begging profusely that they need money to purchase drugs for their ailing relations. In most cases, it is for their children. And those children would have just undergone one form of surgery or the other.

For those who normally beg for transport fares, part of the trick is to exaggerate the distance in order to draw sympathy from the public.

A Yaba-based resident, Mr. ThankGod Ijeh, narrating his experience with a beggar at Yaba, says he was approached by a well -dressed young man who spoke flawless English, begging for transport fare.

He states, “He told me that he came all the way from Ikorodu to Yaba, to visit a relation but missed him narrowly, and that he did not have enough money to go back to Ikorodu.

“I asked him the exact amount he needed and he said N500. I calculated it and I discovered he needed between N350 and N400. Though I never believed his tale, I gave him only N200.”

While Ijeh was kind enough to part with N200, Mr. Fatai Olusayo had a different experience.
Olusayo, who lives at New Oko Oba area of Lagos, recalls an encounter he had with a female corporate beggar recently. The woman’s deceitful streak was unveiled by him.

He says, “I was busy in my workshop when I noticed a middle-aged woman who clutched a polythene bag, dressed in Ankara, advance toward me. I had thought she was about to ask for directions to where she was headed.

“But I was surprised when she said she was on her way to Agbado and she had no money on her, that I should assist her with money.

“Since I believe in alms giving as a Muslim, I gave N150, knowing that the amount would take her from that point to Agbado. She thanked me and left.”

But Olusayo was surprised to see the same woman the next day, still relating the same story to another would-be ‘victim.’ He raised the alarm, which removed the scale of deceit from the woman’s eyes.

Olusayo explains that he and others who had gathered warned her never to ply ‘her trade’ in their territory any longer.

A young man, who could probably be in his late 20s, had approached our correspondent on Monday at the bus stop in front of the Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, and begged him for fare.

From his looks, he did not betray any sign of someone in distress. He looked calm and calculated. But when asked where he was headed, he paused for a while, before he muttered, “Oshodi”. The correspondent was torn between two thoughts, the first being that he was about to be fleeced second and that he had an opportunity to help a ‘brother’ in need.

These are what many Lagosians experience almost on daily basis.

However, psychologists and psychiatrists have given reasons why there are such faces of corporate beggars in the society.

A senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology, University of Lagos, Dr. Bamikole Fagbohungbe, says there are two types of corporate beggars that are easily identifiable in the society – those forced into begging either due to the economic downturn or those who have been sacked from paid employment; and those who do not want to work but looking for easy ways out.

He says, “Those who are in the first category are those who took to corporate begging due to hopelessness of their situation. They had tried all other means but there is no succour. Those in the second category are those who want to cut corners, they do not want to work. Rather, they prefer the easy way out.”

A psychiatrist and a former head of the Department of Psychiatry, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osogbo campus, Dr. Adeoye Oyewole, notes that since the military had exterminated the middle class, it is either one is at the upper crust or lower class.

He states that the non-existence of the social security system for the unemployed and the aged does not augur well for the society. “When there is economic dislocation either through loss of job or lack of employment, some people resort to corporate begging. First, they may begin by going to their friends and asking for assistance. it is when the friends begin to treat them with disdain that they look elsewhere.

“There is even a type of corporate begging among those political office holders who left office some years back. They use all sorts of gimmicks to raise money from some of their colleagues currently in office.

“It is high time the state and federal governments instituted social security system as we have in the United Kingdom, which we even tagged capitalist economy. They tax the rich heavily to take care of the poor.”

Liverpool hold talks with Suarez's agent in bid to to keep star at Anfield after £30m bid from Arsenal

Liverpool have held further talks with Luis Suarez’s agent and reiterated their determination to keep the Uruguay striker at Anfield.
But on the day agent Pere Guardiola - brother of Bayern Munich boss Pep - spoke with Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre, Suarez’s compatriot Edison Cavani claimed his fellow countryman needs to quit Liverpool and find a club that can give him Champions League football.
Uncertain future: But Liverpool still hope to keep Luis Suarez
Uncertain future: But Liverpool still hope to keep Luis Suarez
Guardiola arrived at the Melwood training complex on Monday, hours after it had emerged Arsenal had a formal bid of £30million for Suarez rebuffed. The agent has been in regular contact with Liverpool and the talks, which had been scheduled, were described as cordial.
Suarez, who would prefer to move to Real Madrid, is not due to report back for pre-season training until July 22 and it has yet to be decided whether the 26-year-old will take any part in Liverpool’s tour of the Far East and Australia.
Arsenal are the only club to have made a serious enquiry about Suarez but the figure was some way below the £40million fee in his contract that stipulates he can seek permission to speak to clubs prepared to offer that figure.
Fernando Torres
Stewart Downing
All change? Liverpool would want a similar fee to that received for Torres to sell Suarez, while Stewart Downing could be on his way to West Ham
Liverpool, however, do not have to sell at £40m and if they are going to lose their prized asset they would be looking for a price similar to the £50m they received from Chelsea – who also hold an interest in Suarez – for Fernando Torres in January 2011.
It was inevitable Suarez - who still has six matches to serve of the 10-game ban he was given for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April - was going to be of interest to tops clubs this summer and Cavani, who is bound for Paris St Germain, believes he deserves a suitable platform.
‘Luis has to be playing Champions League football,’ said Cavani. ‘When you have the most complete striker in the world not playing in the top competition in Europe, then you know something is not right. He deserves the Champions League and the Champions League deserves him.
‘Real Madrid are a great team; Chelsea are a great team and Arsenal are a great team – but the most important thing is that they can offer him consistent Champions League football, which is not something Liverpool have been able to do.
‘I can tell you his love for Liverpool is very real. If they were playing in the Champions League, he would not consider leaving. But he knows he is now at the stage of his career that he needs to be playing at the top level.’
West Ham, meanwhile, have entered into discussion with Liverpool over the possible sale of Stewart Downing. West Ham enquired about Downing at the end of last season and felt encouraged to return.
The England winger finished the most recent campaign strongly but he has two years left on his contract and if Liverpool were to recoup half of the £20million they spent on him in July 2011, a deal could be done.

'Ronaldo wants to retire at Real Madrid: President Perez

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to play out the rest of his career at Real Madrid according to the club's president Florentino Perez.
The Portugal international's contract at the Bernabeu runs out in 2015 but reports have linked the former World Player of the Year with a move away from the Spanish giants.
'The person who wants to retire at Real Madrid is Ronaldo and Real want him to retire here too,' Real president Florentino Perez said to Spanish media.

'There haven’t been any negotiations (on a new deal) because he is on holiday. Be in no doubt, Cristiano will retire here because he wants to. Just as (Zinedine) Zidane and other great players have done.'
Meanwhile, the La Liga side have been linked with a possible move for Tottenham star Gareth Bale but Perez was quick to dismiss the speculation.
'He is a great player that belongs to a club we are very friendly with,' he said. 'But we haven’t made any offer.'

No offer: Real have not made a bid for Tottenham's Gareth Bale
One player who could be on his way out of the Bernabeu is Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain, however Real claim they have not received an offer and are not keen on selling the striker despite his wish to leave.
Perez said: 'We don’t want him to go. Furthermore, no one from Arsenal has been here to make any type of offer, not for 27 million euros, or anything.'

New Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has already started rebuilding the side with the signing of Isco from Malaga, who was a target for Manchester City, and defender Dani Carvajal from Bayer Leverkusen.

EXCLUSIVE: Barca bid £30m for Luiz... but Chelsea will refuse to sell and demand more

Barcelona have launched a £30million bid for David Luiz – but Chelsea will refuse to sell him at that price.
Barca, who for all of their quality remain short of options at the back, are prepared to increase their offer for the talented defender who they view as the long-term successor to captain Carles Puyol.
Sources claim it is 50-50 whether Luiz will stay at Chelsea.

Tempting: Luiz could play alongside Gerard Pique and Neymar at the Nou Camp
He has become a key player since his arrival from Benfica in January 2011 but he is tempted by joining arguably Europe's strongest team.
In addition to lining up alongside Gerard Pique or Puyol, Luiz would be play alongside Brazil team-mates Dani Alves and Neymar.
Barca last season were forced to play midfielders Javier Mascherano or Alex Song at the back in Puyol's absence and it is this, combined with Luiz's ability to bring the ball out of defence, that makes him their top target.

Spurs up the fight to keep Bale after using Madrid target to unveil new home kit

Gareth Bale delivered the sort of clue Tottenham supporters have been searching for when he appeared with the familiar cockerel crest on his chest at the new shirt launch.
Bale was one of four players selected to model the new Under Armour kit in London on Monday after the first pre-season training session.
Jermain Defoe, Michael Dawson and Brad Friedel were also on parade for Spurs and all agreed that keeping Bale from the clutches of wealthy European clubs like Real Madrid and PSG was vital to their hopes of reaching the Champions League.

It seemed even more significant on a day when Barcelona confirmed they struck a deal to sell Spain's all-time leading scorer David Villa to Atletico Madrid for fee thought to be £4.4million.

Villa had been one of the top summer targets for manager Andre Villas-Boas, who felt his attacking unit was short of options last season when Tottenham dropped points late in the campaign and slipped out of the top four.

Brazilian midfielder Paulinho has been recruited for £17million but Villas-Boas is unlikely to be impressed at losing Villa since a move for last summer's top target Joao Moutinho seemed to be in the bag only to collapse on the final day of the transfer window.

Moutinho has since moved from Porto to Monaco, the newly-rich French team who also covet AVB as their next manager.

Bale was not allowed to speak to the national newspapers but did conduct television and magazine interviews to be broadcast closer to the start of the season.

He is not anxious to leave even if he has yet to sign the improved contract Spurs are willing to offer him and his team-mates seem to be under the impression he will be with them for the season ahead.

'Yeah, it's important,' said Defoe. 'This year, we want a great season and we to get into the Champions League and to do that you've got to keep your best players.

'What Gareth did here last year was unbelievable. The amount of goals he scored, at times playing out of position up top off the forward and show the composure he did in certain games when he was one-on-one with the keeper and produced some unbelievable finishes. He's a special player. You want to keep your top players.'

Club captain Dawson added: 'He's here to do well, like all of us. Like the manager, like the staff at the football club, we're striving to be successful for this club.
'I remember him coming in as a 17-year-old. He's not changed, he's a top guy, he's got a great family around him. He's one of the boys, the lads love having him around. It hasn't always been easy since he signed, he was out of the team like myself but the boy is world class.
'Someone as good as him you certainly want to keep him. He's world-class. I'm very lucky to play with him. Last year, some of the goals he scored to help win us football matches were unbelievable.'

MTN staff, student shot dead by vigilante in Abeokuta

Tragedy struck in Abeokuta, yesterday, when men of the Vigilante Service of Ogun State, VSO, reportedly shot dead a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Moruf Raji, 29, and a staff of a telecommunication company, MTN Nigeria, Akeem Usman, 32, while chasing suspected robbers.

The incident occurred at Adigbe, at about 1.00 a.m when a team of the vigilance service allegedly ordered residents of 18A, Sorinola Avenue, Oriyanrin, to open their gate for them to arrest suspected robbers believed to be hiding in the building. An eye witness told Vanguard News that some of the residents who were mostly students refused to open the gate, suspecting the vigilante men to be robbers trying to play smart.

The witness further explained that Moruf and Akeem went out from their rooms and opened the gate for them but one of the men of VSO opened fire on the two men killing them instantly. Vanguard News gathered that men of the VSO still went ahead to force their way into the compound after shooting the two men and ransacked the rooms, while the victims were bleeding profusely. It was further gathered that, the vigilantes used their patrol vehicle to rush the victims to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba Abeokuta where they died following excessive loss of blood.

Vanguard learnt that, Moroof was a Business Administration student of MAPOLY who was on one-year Industrial attachment and Akeem who was a staff of MTN that go married seven months ago. According to findings, Akeem worked in Lagos but came to Abeokuta to attend a religious programme scheduled for 10.00am on Sunday. He was said to have resolved to sleep with a family-friend because of the proximity of the house to the venue of the programme. His driver, Abayomi Awoyajo was also said to have sustained injury after being battered by the members of vigilance during the raid.

Narrating the incident Abayomi said they were all inside when at about 1.00am ,the vigilante men came asking them to open the door. “We all thought they were armed robbers, we started running helter-skelter, some of us hid in the wardrobe, while some hid under the chairs,” he said. The 30 year old driver, also said the two victims in pool of their blood crawled back into the house, crying loud, while the vigilantes forced their way into the house to continue dealing with all of them in a brutal matter.

“They even asked for brother Akeem’s car key which I gave to them, but, could not be taken out because of the security device installed in it, we were later rushed to the hospital” he explained.

However, as at the time of filing this report, all the members of the vigilante service that were involved in the act have been arrested by the police from Adigbe station.

The case was said to have been transferred to Eleweran Police Headquarters, Abeokuta but the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Muyiwa Adejobi could not be reached as at the time of filing this report

Did one of dead Asiana victims SURVIVE the crash only to be run over and killed by first responders?

Passengers fled the Asiana Airlines jetliner after it crash-landed. Authorities say one of the dead victims may have been hit after exiting the plane
One of the Chinese teenagers who was found dead in the Asiana Airlines wreckage may have actually survived the crash - only to be struck and killed by emergency responders scrambling to the crash site, it was revealed on Sunday.  Authorities say one of the two dead victims from the crash was found outside the plane and had apparently be hit by a fire truck or an ambulance. San Francisco's medical examiner is now conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of the girl's death, fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said. 'One of the deceased did have injuries consistent with those of having been run over by a vehicle,' Talmadge said. 'Many agencies were on the field yesterday.'
In the chaos of the crash-landing of Asiana Airlines Flight 214, dozens of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the scene to help recuse the jetliner's 291 passengers and battle the blaze the broke out on board. Witnesses reported seeing dozens of people running on the tarmac, attempting to escape the burning wreckage of the plane.  Asiana Airlines said the two dead were Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia, both 16 years old from Jiangshan in eastern China. They were both headed for a summer camp in the U.S. - part of a group of 70 Chinese students and teachers aboard the Boeing 777 that crash-landed.
A total of 141 Chinese nationals were aboard the flight that was bound for San Francisco from Seoul, South Korea.  Miss Wang's parents were both on the fight, as well, and could be seen sobbing as they learned their daughter died in the crash.
The black box aboard the Boeing 777 jetliner set out three crucial moments - beginning 7 seconds before impact - that show the plane was approaching the runway too slowly and that the pilots were trying to correct the problem.
National Transportation Safety Board officials said today that the jetliner, which was carrying 291 passengers, was flying 'significantly' slower than the 137 knots that is ideal for jetliners preparing to land in San Francisco. NTSB Chair Deborah Hersman said an initial examination of the plane's in-flight data recorders show no indication that the plane was in trouble until 7 seconds before impact.
It was at that point that the pilots tried to increase the speed of the plane. 'We have to take another look at the raw data and corroborate it with radar and air traffic information to make sure we have a very precise speed,' Hersman said. 'But again, we are not talking about a few knots here or there. We're talking about a significant amount of speed below 137.'
By all accounts, the plane was set to land normally - its landing gear was down and its flaps were set to the standard 30 degrees. Just 4 seconds before the plane crash-landed, a 'stick shaker' warning activated, notifying the pilots that the plane was about to stall. The 'stick shaker' literally shakes the control stick that the pilot is holding. It is meant to tell the pilot that the engines will stall if the aircraft maintains the current speed. Then, finally, 1.5seconds before impact, the voice recorders revealed that the pilots were planning to abort the landing.  The pilots - who have not been identified - announced a 'go-around' - an aborted landing in which the plane approaches the runway but instead of  touching down, it lifts off again and circles around to approach the runway again. The Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul, South Korea, which carried 61 Americans, broke apart and caught fire as it tumbled in cart-wheels on the runway shortly before noon on  Saturday. The crash killed two teenage Chinese students, one of whom was reportedly ejected from the plane when the tail section broke off. At least two people have been paralyses by their injuries. Some 185 passengers were hospitalized.
Hersman cautioned that the findings from the black box aboard the plane are the result of only a preliminary investigation of that in-flight data. Investigators have also not yet spoken to the captain and first officer who were flying the plane. They hope to interview the pilots in the coming days.
Hersman refused to speculate on whether the crash was a result of pilot error or a mechanical failure.  A study of the weather at the time reveals that there were no reports of wind shear or other adverse conditions at the time, according to the NTSB.

The pilots navigated the landing manually, but sight on the bright, sunny day, in part because the instrument landing system on the runway was inoperative.
The parents of Wang Linjia, center - one of the teenage students killed in Saturday's crash - mourn the los of their daughter at San Francisco International Airport
Numerous fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the scene of the crash as passengers fled. Firefighters say one of the Chinese students may have been hit and killed in the choas
A total of 307 people were on board the plane when it crash-landed. Most managed to walk away from the crash
Ms Hersman declined to say whether the crash was the result of pilot error or mechanical failure. She said the investigation remains ongoing

Millions of tonnes of silt forced downstream through giant dam in China

Visitors watch water gushing from the section of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir on the Yellow River, during a sand-washing operation
These photographs may look like scenes from an apocalyptic film. But in fact they are of an annual operation to move 30 million tonnes of silt downstream a year in the Henan province. Bystanders holding umbrellas are dwarfed as they watch the tremendous rush of water gushing through gaps in a dam. It is part of a carefully-chorepgraphed operation to remove silt from the Yellow River in Luoyang. More than 390 million tonnes shifted this way over the last 13 years. The silt-carrying water gushes out of three specialised holes in the dam.
The Yellow River authority says the operation lowers the river bed in the lower reach of the river by an average of 2.03 meters each year.
The dam stands at 154m (505ft) tall and is 1,317m (4,321ft) wide. When it was built opened in 2000, following a six-year construction, it had cost US$3.5billion to construct.

Residents turn out to watch the annual event - and try to avoid a drenching by protecting themselves with umbrellas
