'He was friendly and polite': Hairdresser ex-girlfriend of terror suspect says Adebolajo was a 'normal, regular boy'

A beautician who once dated one of the Woolwich killers said he was ‘lovely’ and just a ‘normal boy’.

Justine Rigden, 26, is understood to have been Michael Adebolajo’s girlfriend for a year when he was a teenager.

Her relationship with the boy known to his friends as ‘Narn’ ended before he adopted radical Islamist views.

She described her shock after realising her ex-boyfriend was the bloodied man seen wielding a meat cleaver as he claimed butchering a British soldier was an ‘eye for an eye’.

Miss Rigden works for a hairdressing salon in Hornchurch and claims to have been shortlisted as the ‘Face of Essex’.

She said: ‘He was really friendly and really polite, and there was never anything to  suggest he would be caught up with anything like this.

‘He was just a lovely, polite boy. He stayed at my family’s house and I stayed with his. He was a very family-oriented person.

‘He had a group of friends from Hackney. They weren’t “wrong-uns”, they were  OK, and he used to do a bit of MC-ing, rapping.

‘Nobody can believe it. He was just this normal, regular boy.’

In a video posted on YouTube, the stylist says she admires Jennifer Lopez, because she is a ‘role model for real women with curves’.

Pictures on Miss Rigden’s Facebook page showed her modelling in photo shoots, before the page was taken down from the internet on Thursday night.

Her profile on the website of the hair salon where she works describes her as an ‘enthusiastic member of the team who will make you feel valued the moment you walk in  the door’.

School friends of Adebolajo say he lived a Western lifestyle in his teens, growing up in Essex as a Christian with hard-working Nigerian immigrant parents.

Among his friends on Facebook are two serving police officers who knew him from school.

He was also close friends with a soldier who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq.Adebolajo was even consoled by friends at the funeral of Lance Corporal Kirk Redpath who died in 2007 when his Land Rover was blown up as it protected a convoy near Basra.

The pair were classmates at Marshalls Park School, in Romford, and spent time at each other’s houses after lessons.

The soldier’s brother Grant, 26, said: ‘What happened in Woolwich was butchery, unbelievable. ‘I’ve asked myself whether he would have done this to my brother also.

‘I don’t know what happened to Michael because he used to be the most laid-back, nicest guy in the world. But I know that if my brother were alive today he’d want to try and make him see sense.’

He added: ‘Describing my emotions is so difficult. I can’t feel anger toward the Michael I knew, because he was so nice a person. We can’t understand it. I don’t think we ever will.’

Adebolajo, 28, is believed to have been radicalised in his late teens by hate preachers Omar Bakri Muhammed and Anjem Choudary.

Bakri Muhammed, who was thrown out of Britain when he was the leader of the now banned extremist group Al Muhajiroun, boasted he had converted Adebolajo to Islam when the boy visited his street stall in London.

‘We would talk about the meaning of life with passers-by,’ he said. ‘He stopped to speak with us and we invited him to Islam.

‘Because he is a convert I can still remember him. At that time there were a lot of conflicts around the world, and in Iraq and in Afghanistan especially. We talked to him about these and he sympathised with the Muslim people, it seemed.

‘He was in his 20s, a quiet boy who didn’t ask many questions. He used to come to our open talks and speeches.’

Despite spouting rhetoric about supposed British crimes in 'our lands', Adebolajo is a British citizen born in London.

His mother and father are hard-working Nigerian immigrants from an academic family in West Africa who settled in London in the early 1980s. A Christian couple, they believed in assimilating into British life, and Michael seems to have forged easy friendships with schoolmates of all colours and creeds.

Virtually all the friends on his Facebook page have traditional British names such as Louise, Kelly, Robert, Craig, Gemma, Lauren and Paul, to name a few. Among them is Matthew Selt, now a professional snooker player.

He was 'just a lovely, lovely guy', in the words of former classmate Stephen Cavalier - who, as a serving PC in the Metropolitan Police - could scarcely have followed a different path.

Speaking at his home in Essex yesterday, Mr Cavalier said: 'It seems odd to say it now, after the events of yesterday, but I remember him as just a lovely, lovely guy.

'I knew Michael at Marshalls Park School in Romford when we were teenagers. He was a good sportsman and just an all-round nice guy.'

He said he was no longer close to Adebolajo, who had requested they become 'Facebook friends' a few years ago.

'As soon as I saw the news last night I immediately recognised it was Michael. I was in shock really when I saw him.'

Adebolajo's dark side seems to have been awakened in his mid-teens, around the time Tony Blair was sending British troops into Afghanistan and Iraq.

Zoo worker has died after being mauled by tiger in front of visitors as she fed it in animal enclosure

A young zookeeper died last night after being mauled by one of her tigers.

Sarah McClay, 24, from the Barrow area, suffered a heart attack and had to be resuscitated by paramedics at a wildlife park in the Lake District.

Hundreds of visitors are believed to have been in the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, at Dalton-in-Furness at the time.

Ms McClay was taken by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital following the attack, where she later died.

Police and Barrow Borough Council are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Cumbria Police said the tiger was locked in its enclosure following the attack and that members of the public were not at any risk during the incident.

Visitors were asked to leave the wildlife park before it closed early.

Police said Ms McClay's family were 'very shocked and distressed' and had requested privacy to grieve.

It is thought she had been feeding the tiger or cleaning out the cage when the animal pounced.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said paramedics were on the scene within nine minutes.

‘We sent an ambulance and helicopter and she was air lifted to hospital in Preston. She was extremely ill, the spokesman said.

‘They were very traumatic injuries. She was very badly mauled. She went into cardiac arrest at the scene.

‘The crews performed CPR on her and managed to bring her back so that she could be flown by helicopter.

‘The crews who were there were offered counselling afterwards, as is standard procedure with this kind of incident.’ Early reports suggested police armed response units were also alerted.

Police said members of the public were not at risk at any time and that after the keeper was taken to safety the tiger was locked in its enclosure.

The park closed early and all visitors left after the accident.

A statement on the park's Facebook site last night said: 'Today we have had a very serious incident at the zoo , one of our zoo keepers was involved and has been taken to hospital as you may all be hearing on the news. We have no further information at this time, but our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family at this time. The zoo will be open as usual tomorrow and every day.'

The South Lakes Wild Animal Park, which attracts about 500,000 visitors each year, claims to be one of the best conservation zoos in the UK.

It houses three Sumatran tigers and a 17-year-old Amur tiger.

Its website says: ‘We are holding them as ambassadors for their species to raise awareness.’ The 17-acre site was established by animal nutritionist David Gill, 42, ten years ago.

He had no experience of running a zoo but started building the attraction himself because of ‘a desire to see education and conservation brought into the public awareness by the reality of a close, wild experience’.

He still designs and builds all the facilities at the zoo with the help of staff. Last night, zoo visitors took to the internet to express concern for the keeper.

One wrote: ‘I have visited the zoo many times and always felt safe. My thoughts are with the keeper but also David Gill and the rest of the staff. He is a very caring employer and will be taking this hard.’

Another wrote: ‘So tragic, my son volunteered there for three months whilst taking a gap year from university, a fantastic place to visit. All the keepers are professional and really care for all the animals.’

Despite people opening the car doors, the couple still did not wake up but they are breathing as at the time I took these pictures.
What could have happened to this couple? Were they drugged or are they on drugs?"

What To Do When Your Guy Gets Jealous

What To Do When Your Guy Gets JealousThings can get more than a little complicated when the green monster makes its way into your relationship. Your guy feels jealous, you insist there’s nothing to worry about, but he can’t seem to get over it — sound familiar? Here’s how to handle it:

Consider the source.
Put yourself in his shoes for a minute. Have you been acting a bit flirty with your coworker? Cozying up to one of his pals when you go out? Even if your actions have seemed harmless, take the time to step back and see why your guy may be feeling this way.
Focus on the fix.
If you’re not careful, talking about the issue can quickly turn into a negative back-and-forth that goes nowhere. Rather than rehashing the problem again and again, steer the conversation toward action. Ask what you can do to ease his insecurities, and come up with a few small, simple acts that may help him feel better.
Don’t dish to your friends.
When you fight with your guy, it’s tempting to call your friends to complain, but that’s only going to make matters worse. Respect your relationship by keeping the issue between you and him.
Make it about him.
Chances are, the jealousy issue is actually about attention. If he felt like he was getting plenty of attention from you, then he may not worry about how you interact with everyone else. Make a point to show him extra affection when you’re out with other people — when you build up your relationship, you’ll build up his confidence and hopefully ease the issue.
Tobacco Smoking Leads To Low Sperm Count And Weak Erection

Dr Joseph Natsah of General Hospital Kachia in Kaduna State, has advised youths against tobacco smoking, saying it leads to impotence.
Natsah said in an interview on Tuesday in Kaduna that tobacco smoking results in low sperm count, weak erection and impotence.
He warned girls involved in smoking to desist from the habit as it would also prevent them from either conceiving or having still birth.
Natsah said tobacco smoke generally has adverse effect on every organ of the body, including the immune system.
The medical practitioner listed some of the conditions generated by smoking to include coronary and heart disease, as well as breathlessness and influenza,
He also said that smoking causes cancer, such as leukaemia, cancer of the bladder, throat and stomach.
Also, a laboratory technician, Miss Mercy Onu said smoking was contributing to higher percentage of deformed sperms and impotency.
She also said it contributed to "painful ulcers along the digestive tract and build up fatty deposit on the artery walls", thereby leading to low blood flow and heart attack.
A police sergeant, Dalhatu Konkiyel, who said he was a "retired chronic smoker", said that he experienced various health challenges while smoking.
Some of the challenges, he said, were poor vision, high blood pressure, common cold , tooth decay, gum disease, sleeping and blood circulation problems.
He advised the youths not to indulge in the habit, to avoid early death and psychological trauma.
Konkiyel called on the Federal Government to ban the manufacture, distribution, sale and smoking of tobacco in the country.

Lebanese man arrested for kidnapping in Lagos (PHOTOS)

A 23 year old Lebanese man has been arrested by police in Lagos for kidnapping his 61 year old aunt, Alhaja Essa Dannawi. Mohammed Dannawi (pictured above) conspired with a former employee of his aunt, Obi Kwentua, (pictured above) to kidnap the woman on May 2nd at her home in Ebute Meta, Lagos.

Mohammed, who later confessed to the crime, told police during interrogation that he didn't kidnap his aunt because of money but to punish her because she offended him and his wife. He said:

“My aunty did something very bad to my wife and I and so I decided to punish her. I met with Obi (Kwentua) and told him that I wanted my aunty kidnapped. I gave him the spare key to her house and he in turn hired some boys to do the work. On the day of the operation, I left the house and five guys stormed the place and took my aunty away. The plan was not to demand money from her, it was just punishment.” After the kidnapping, the kidnappers demanded N100m ransom from the woman's family but later agreed to collect N4m. It was during negotiations with the kidnappers that Mohammed confessed to being behind the kidnap and with his co-operation the police were able to arrest one of the suspects, Obi Kwentua when he came to collect the N4million ransom from relatives of the victim at Rita Lori Hotel in Surulere.

Essa Dannawi was later released while Mohammed and Kwentua were arrested

'I have two daughters with Masters Degrees and they are unemployed' - El Rufai Cries Out

Former Federal Capital Territory minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, on Thursday bemoaned the spate of unemployment in the country, saying despite his connections, he had yet to secure jobs for his two daughters, who are both holders of Masters Degrees.

El-Rufai said this while delivering a lecture at the Sixth Annual Alao Aka-Bashorun Lecture, organised by the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch.

The former minister, whose lecture was entitled Impunity, Injustice and Insecurity: What Role for the Law,' said Nigeria needed to create three million jobs yearly to tackle its employment problem.

He said, "Forty-two per cent of Nigerian youths are unemployed.

"I have two daughters with Masters Degrees and they are unemployed. They have been at home for more than a year and I cannot get a job for them.

"We are sitting on a demographic time bomb and unless we have visionary leaders that are able to plan for the future, we will have a huge problem."

According to him, the Nigerian government is spending N2bn daily on security, instead of investing in infrastructure and human capital development.

El-Rufai queried the N100bn Amnesty Programme of the Federal Government, saying it had not solved the problem of pipeline vandalism and oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

He said, "Our oil production output is at its lowest since 2009 as a result of oil theft and closure of facilities by oil companies.

"That is why the government is borrowing more than ever and dipping into the nation's foreign reserves."

The former FCT minister added that granting amnesty to people who take up arms against the state would not solve the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.

"Even if you grant amnesty to Boko Haram, without addressing the fundamental issues such as lack of opportunities, poverty and social injustice, it will not solve the problem," he said.

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Akin Oyebode, advocated life imprisonment for corrupt public officials as a way of reducing the high incidence of corruption in the country.

His lecture was entitled, 'Corruption and Insecurity in the Society: What Role for the Law?'
She's made a point of ignoring the unkind jibes about her pregnancy weight gain.

But a new trailer for Keeping Up With The Kardashians reveals no critic is as harsh as Kim is upon herself.

‘How the f**k did I get like this?’ she asks in an advert promoting the eight’s series of the popular show.

Always having been one to open up to the public, Kim even flaunts her bare belly on screen in the forthcoming episodes.

At one point in the 30-second advert she stands lifting up her white vest to reveal her large stomach and black underwear.

The 32-year-old E! reality star’s pregnancy clearly doesn’t get off to a good start as she rants about her body.

In other scenes Kim is also seen crying - and she isn't the only one.

The stars of the series including Khloe, Kourtney, Rob and Kris Jenner narrative the short clip.

‘People think they know us. All our secrets, all those crazy ups and downs.

'But they don’t know the half of it,’ they state as they get viewers to tune into the new episodes to see even more of their much-exposed life.

The video shows Rob, 26, bawling as he presumably struggles to come to terms with his weight gain, failed relationships and less than successful career.

Khloe comments about her younger brother, ‘he cries at all times.’

The outspoken star then asks the matriarch of the family whether her husband Bruce Jenner is moving out of the family home.

‘Is Bruce getting his own place?’ she questions her mother Kris.

In a voiceover the momanager than can be heard saying ‘we need a break’.

But it is left deliberately unclear as to whether she is referring to a split between the pair.

Kris can also be seen getting emotional as she wipes away tears with a tissue in the advert leading up to the June 2 premiere in America.

The programme will be aired at 9pm before the premiere The Wanted Life on the E! network and former The Hills star Brody Jenner joins as a regular cast member.

Women now allowed to walk Topless in public in New york (LOOK)

Ladies of New York , you are free to walk bare-breasted through the city! New York City's 34,000 police officers have been instructed that, should they encounter a woman in public who is shirtless but obeying the law, they should not arrest her. This is a good step towards gender parity in public spaces.

This decision means that breast exposure is not considered public lewdness, indecent exposure, or disorderly conduct. It also notes that, should a crowd form around a topless woman, the officer should instruct the crowd to disperse and then respond appropriately if it does not. Relative coverage is no longer a factor.

This policy shift comes after several years of litigation and protest. In the 1992 case People v. Ramona Santorelli and Mary Lou Schloss, the New York Court of Appeals ruled in favor of two women who were arrested with five others for exposing their breasts in a Rochester park, holding the law void as discriminatory. The ruling was put to the test in 2005, when Jill Coccaro bared her breasts on Delancey Street in New York, citing the 1992 decision, and was detained for twelve hours. She subsequently successfully sued the city for $29,000.

In 2007, Go Topless, a national organization supporting gender equality in shirtlessness laws, established Go Topless Day. Dozens of women protest – often topless – in thirty cities around the United States, promoting equal rights to be shirtless. Protests usually include chants of "Free your breasts. Free your minds" and a song "Let ‘em Breathe" to the tune of the Beatles' "Let it Be."

While some who have witnessed these events have suggested that "this is extreme liberalism and why America's in decline" or "it's degrading to women," others have been supportive. One man even said he would encourage his wife to join them.

Though bare-breasted women might shock the sensibilities of some in the public, it is encouraging to see the police responding positively to gender bias, even on such a seemingly small scale. After all, no one thinks twice about a man shirtless on a summer day. However, the female nipple or chest is still considered "lewd." By reminding its officers of this, the NYPD is publicly declaring that it will no longer perpetuate unconstitutional gender discrimination, a standard to which all law enforcement should be held and a decision for which it should be applauded.

See The Face Of The British soldier hacked down at Woolwich

The British soldier hacked down yesterday in broad day light by two Islamist fanatics has been identified as 25 year old Lee Rigby.

According to the UK Daily Mail, Rigby had recently fought in Afghanistan and was walking towards the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, south-east London, yesterday afternoon, when he was run down by a car on the pavement and hacked to death by the two men....Another pics after the cut:

Sister of Nigerian Terrorist who killed a British Soldier (PICTURED)

The sister of the terror suspect accused of hacking a soldier to death smiled yesterday as she was escorted from her home and got into a police car.

Blessing Adebolajo, 32, was led from her property yesterday morning just hours after her brother Michael, 28, was filmed ranting with blood on his hands yards from the body of the murdered soldier in Woolwich.

Blessing was carrying a bag full of clothes as she got into an unmarked police vehicle outside her flat in Romford, Essex, at 8.10am.
It is understood she was not arrested, but police will undoubtedly want to question her about her brother who neighbours said was seen regularly at the house.

A woman purporting to be Adebolajo's sister told the Romford Recorder newspaper yesterday: 'We didn't know he was going to do this'

'He liked to smoke a bit of green (marijuana). We played football, a kick-about on the courts. He was a big lad, not the sort of guy you'd want to cross,' he told the newspaper.

'He used to be a normal bloke. he always had a big smile on his face. he'd say "All right Wellsy, all right boy, what's happening?".'

Police also raided a home in Saxilby, Lincolnshire, yesterday which is believed to belong to the terror suspect's father Anthony, 56.

In a chilling rant captured on camera the other side of the road from where drummer Lee Rigby, 25, lay dead, the suspect named as Adebolajo declared: 'The only reason

Dayo Amusa is not a new fish in the waters of Yoruba film industry. When the roll call of ‘big girls’ in the industry is called, Dayo Amusa will surely not be missing. Aside being an actress, just like many actresses in the Yoruba movie world, Dayo is also a producer. She recently floated a school in Surulere, which we learnt is giving her something to be happy about. When it comes to her romantic life, Dayo has had her own fair share, both on the positive and negative notes, in terms of news reports about it. In a recent interview, the actress boasted that she is the person who breaks guys’ hearts and not the other way round. Hear her, ”I have never been heart broken but I always find myself breaking hearts.” Though this could not be confirmed by Nigeriafilms.com but we hope some of the guys she has dated before will confirm her statement.

Assassin-to-be at the side a ranting cleric: Choudary claims picture shows arrested Islamic fanatic, 28, at 2007 demo

Adebolajo identified as one of two men suspected of killing Lee Rig

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary was last night accused of having 'blood on his hands' after it emerged killer Michael Adebolajo was radicalised at the hands of his extremist group.

Dramatic BBC footage has emerged of Adebolajo standing side by side with Choudary as the Al-Muhajiroun leader ranted on a megaphone during a 2007 demonstration in Central London.

Evidence of the link sparked calls for urgent action to be taken against the hate preacher.

Scroll down for video

Al-Muhajiroun has been linked to a series of terror attacks through its former members and followers of Choudary and former leader Omar Bakri.

It and several of its offshoot organisations, including Islam4UK, were banned in 2010, but Choudary - who is known for his disgraceful rhetoric against British soldiers - has never been prosecuted in the UK. Last night it emerged that Adebolajo was a regular on radical marches in East London in the mid-2000s and often attended incendiary protests and lectures.

Protests by the group and its offshoots have featured chants such as 'British Soldiers Burn in Hell' and banners such as 'Hell for Heroes' and those describing soldiers as 'Baby Killers'.

One linked group, Muslims Against Crusades, burnt a poppy on Remembrance Sunday in 2010 and its supporters targeted a forces' homecoming parade in Luton.

Last night Choudary disgracefully blamed the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby on the 'presence of British forces in Muslim countries'.

He said: 'We must concentrate on why this incident took place. That is the presence of British forces in Muslim countries and the atrocities they've committed, and how the Muslim community in this country are under pressure due to draconian laws which have tried to silence them.'

He added: 'I'm not going to apologise for exposing the crimes of the British government.

'Radicalisation is a stick which is used to beat the Muslim community. You need to make a distinction between legitimate ideological struggle. We live under a covenant of security. Words like radicalisation and fundamentalism are used by the British Government to silence Muslims.'

The BBC footage showed Adebolajo dressed in white Islamic clothes and surrounded by placards outside Paddington Green police station in April 2007.

He was attending a demonstration followed the arrest of Abu Izzadeen, another Al-Muhajiroun radical who was later sentenced to four and a half years in jail for terrorist fund-raising and incitement.

When asked about the attack, Choudary said: 'What he did was unusual and it's not the kind of view that I propagate and I do not condone the use of violence, but those views are out there.

'Some members of the Muslim community struggle to express themselves and he is making his voice heard in blood.'

Choudary met Adebolajo in 2005 - two years after the terrorist had converted to Islam, but last night claimed he hadn't seen him for two years.

He described Adebolajo as a man of 'impeccable character'.

When reminded by one TV interviewer of his comments about receiving £25,000 in benefits, which he once referred to as 'Jihad seekers allowance', Choudary said: 'I'm not getting £25,000 and I'm not on JSA. Get your facts right.'

Adebolajo is the latest in a long line of terrorists and hate-mongers allegedly to have come under the influence of Choudary

Last month Richard Dart was jailed for 11 years for plotting to attack British soldiers at Wootton Bassett. He was converted to Islam by Choudary and stopped as he tried to leave for Pakistan for terrorist training.

Roshonara Choudhry, the would-be assassin of Stephen Timms MP, was radicalised after reading a website containing Al-Muhajiroun propaganda.

The student stabbed the MP during a constituency surgery in Beckton, East London, in May 2010.

Preacher Abu Izzadeen, a convert from Hackney, East London, was among six Al-Muhajiroun members convicted of urging supporters to fight British troops and for raising terrorist funds. Also known as Trevor Brooks, he was jailed in 2008 last year for four-and-a-half years.

Al-Muhajiroun member Abdul Muhid was jailed for soliciting murder following protests in February 2006 against the Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.

Terror experts said the language used by Adebolajo in his video rant after the killing was reminiscent of the rhetoric used by Choudary and his acolytes.

Anjem Choudary, who led Islamist group Al Muhajiroun - the banned forerunner to Islam4UK where Adebolajo often appeared with other radical protesters - said he recognised him from TV footage at the scene.

Choudary said: 'I went to the same primary school as him in Woolwich, Mulgrave, and grew up in the same area and he came to the local mosque - it was a peaceful community with lots of Muslim people from Somalia and Pakistan. I didn't know him that well so I can't say where his family was from.

'He converted around 2003 to Islam, before I met him and I knew him as his convert name 'Mujaheed' when he used to attend our demonstrations and lectures. I last saw him in 2011, he was a very nice man with impeccable character and nothing unusual about him.

He added: 'What he did was unusual and it's not the kind of view that I propagate and I do not condone the use of violence, but those views are out there. Some members of the Muslim community struggle to express themselves and he is making his voice heard in blood.'

Robin Simcox, research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, said: 'You can imagine Anjem Choudary saying it - this thing about there we will never see peace in our lands until Muslims get it abroad.

'Al-Muhajiroun and its offshoot organisations have always targeted British soldiers with their rhetoric.

'They are radical groups whose message is that attacks on British soldiers are justified.'

He said Choudary was always 'very careful to go as far as he can without falling foul of glorifying terrorism laws'.

He added: 'He will not give instructions to his supporters saying “go out and attack soldiers”. But he would say “you might expect so see it happen”.

Professor Anthony Glees, director of the Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies at the University of Buckingham, said: 'We should never forget that terrorists are not born they are made.'

'We now need to deal properly with the makers - Choudary is a radicaliser who many will think has blood on his hands, and should have been prosecuted for incitement years ago.

'If Adebolajo can be demonstrated to have been a supporter of Al-Muhajiroun then he is a prime example of what happens when students and graduates are radicalised by the likes of Anjem Choudary and Abu Qatada.'

Another London-based radical, Abu Nusaybah, described the terrorist as 'a strong character'.

He added: 'He hid his actions from me, because he knew I would talk him out of it, he knew I believed we should we should voice Muslim concerns and pains publicly.'

British Airways plane is forced to make emergency landing at Heathrow after 'bird strike sparks engine fire'

Both runways were closed at Heathrow airport after a British Airways plane was forced to make an emergency landing. The Airbus A319, which was carrying 75 passengers on its journey to Oslo, was forced to return to the airport moments after taking off because of a 'technical fault', British Airways has said. Dramatic footage from the scene shows smoke billowing from the plane while it is still in the air and eyewitness have described hearing 'a blowout' and seeing one of the engines on fire as it flew overhead. Speculation has emerged that the plane had run into a 'bird strike', although there has been no official confirmation of this. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO A Heathrow spokesman said all of the passengers have been 'safely evacuated' and 'accounted for'. The spokesman said the airport itself remained open throughout the incident. The plane has now been towed away for investigations and both runways have reopened. Officials have ruled out a terror attack and investigators are now looking into the possibility of a bird strike shortly after take-off. Emergency vehicles surrounded the plane and emergency chutes could be seen being deployed after it landed. Eye witness Clive Cook, who lives on the Heathrow flight path, described seeing smoke billowing from the plane, with the right engine on fire. He told Sky News: 'The actual engine itself was on fire. 'This plane was coming over and suddenly the tone of the engine changed dramatically, and I could almost say it sounded as if it was like a blowout, or an explosion. 'I'm absolutely certain that as it came through the clouds, and I looked up... the right engine was on fire, it wasn't smoking, it was actually on fire.' Mr Cook said he saw the plane over the Thames at Battersea as he was taking his daughter to nursery. Another eyewitness, named only as Jamie, was working in his garden near to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, when he saw the plane. He told Sky News: 'All of a sudden we heard this almighty noise. It was like a fire jet going over. We could just see the right engine on fire - it was absolutely horrendous to see. 'You don't see things like that every day, it's incredible really. 'The Airbus A319 aircraft was carrying 75 customers and five crew. 'The aircraft landed safely and cabin crew evacuated customers using emergency slides.  Airline colleagues are now caring for customers in the airport terminal. 'There is likely to be disruption to other flights today into and out of Heathrow.  Customers are advised to check ba.com for information about their flights before departing for the airport. 'The airline has begun a full investigation into the incident and is working with the Air Accident Investigation Bureau to establish the cause.' London Fire Brigade said a crew from Heathrow fire station had assisted the airport’s fire service with 'an aircraft fire'. 'We believe the fire is now out,' it added. The plane was on Heathrow’s northern runway which remained shut until it was towed away. Bird strikes are a serious problem for aircraft and have been known to bring planes down. Passengers on resumed flights at Heathrow were being warned to expect delays of 30-60 minutes as well as 30 minutes of aircraft taxiing time. The incident is being investigated by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch. Captain Mark Searle, chairman of airline pilots’ association Balpa, said: 'This was a professional job done by professional people. As pilots we spend our whole career training to manage incidents such as this in order to avoid an incident becoming a disaster. 'Balpa representatives will be assisting the pilots involved in this incident and providing whatever support they need. And, as always, we will all learn whatever lessons we can.'
