Ramadan: Sultan Directs Muslims To Look Out For New Moon

The Sultan of Sokoto and President- General of Supreme Council Of Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, (NSCIA) Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday, directed Nigerian Muslims to watch out for the new moon of Ramadan on July 8 and report same to him.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman, Advisory committee on religious affairs of the Sokoto Sultanate Council, Professor Sambo Wali Junaid.

The statement reads in part, ‘’This is to inform you that Monday July 8, 2013 is the 29th day of Sha’aban 1434 AH and shall be the day to start looking for the new moon of Ramadan,” it noted.

The statement further gave the following telephone numbers which could be used to report the sighting of the new moon: 0803-715-7100; 0803-041-3534; 0803-507-3872; 0803-596-5322 and 0803-314-3866.

Meanwhile, Muslims all over Nigeria are to look for the new crescent of Ramadan today. This was contained in a statement issued, yesterday, by the Secretary-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.

According to Oloyede, members of the National Moon Sighting Committee have been deployed with appropriate gadgets to various parts of the country for easy sighting of the moon.
He added, “However, other individuals who are able to sight the crescent are requested to contact, through appropriate authorities, any of the following:

“Where the authorities are satisfied that the crescent has been duly sighted, the President-General and Sultan of Sokoto would announce the commencement of the fast.
“However, if the crescent is not sighted on Monday, the Tarawih prayer should be observed on Tuesday July 9 for the commencement of Ramadan on July 10 whether or not it is sighted on that Tuesday.”
