Newcastle United may end up selling £8million striker Papiss Cisse to
avert the crisis that is threatening to derail their sponsorship deal
with money lenders Wonga.
Cisse informed the club several weeks ago that he does not want to
wear the Wonga.com branding on Newcastle United's shirts next season
because of his beliefs as a Muslim.
Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias will wait until Cisse
returns from World Cup duty with Senegal so the pair can sit down to
discuss the delicate issue.
However, the club are heartened that Cisse's protest is an individual
one, with none of the player's Muslim team-mates, most notably Hatem
Ben Arfa and Cheick Tiote, so far expressing objections.
Under sharia law, it is prohibited to benefit from lending money to
another person — the specific nature of payday loan company Wonga,
whose annual percentage rate is 4,214 per cent.
One option would be to allow Cisse to wear an unbranded top during
matches, as striker Frederic Kanoute did with Sevilla when they were
sponsored by the gambling website 888.com.
But Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is concerned the lucrative four-year
deal would be cheapened by his star striker blanking out the sponsor's
name and, if no compromise can be reached, Cisse would move on, with
wealthy Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala already willing to double
Newcastle's money by snapping up the 28-year-old.
Newcastle have no plans to follow the lead of Bolton Wanderers, who
last week pulled out of a similar sponsorship deal with QuickQuid, and
cancel their deal.
The St James' Park club announced its deal with the company last
October and are due to wear the Wonga name on their shirts for the
first time next season.
Cisse's departure would open the door for an emotional return to
Tyneside for hometown hero Andy Carroll, who was sold to Liverpool at
the start of 2011 for £35m.
Carroll has endured a nightmare spell at Anfield and spent last season
on loan at West Ham.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has agreed a £15m deal with Liverpool to
make the move permanent — but Carroll is so far stalling on making a
decision to see if Newcastle come in for him.
Senegal drew their World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Angola yesterday, with
Cisse scoring the opening goal in Luanda before Afonso Guilherme
equalised.

Cristiano Ronaldo: No Real Madrid contract talks
CR7 has revealed he has not had talks with Real Madrid about his
future since the departure of Jose Mourinho over a week ago.
The announcement comes amidst growing speculation that the Portugese
winger is set for a sensational return to English football with
Manchester United, rumours that were only strengthened with news last
week that the superstar has put his Spanish mansion on the market.
Asked about a new contract following Portugal's World Cup qualifier
against Russia, Ronaldo said: "I have not spoken with anyone yet but
the most important thing is the team"
After helping his country secure a vital win over their Group F
rivals, the 28-year-old also took the opportunity to hit back at
former manager Mourinho, seemingly ruling out the possibility of a
summer switch to Chelsea.
In response to Mourinho's suggestion that Ronaldo "thinks he knows
everything", the player responded: "You think I'm worried about that?
I'm concerned with the national team, that's what matters most to me
not the opinion of others."

Britain and Bill Gates sign up to £2.7bn international fund to tackle world hunger
A £2.7 BILLION global agreement aimed at feeding the world's poorest children has been agreed today in London.
David Cameron led the way at the summit, attended by international politicians and powerful philanthropists, with the aim of creating a plan to tackle childhood under-nutrition.
The British Government has agreed to contribute an extra £375million to the fund, in addition to the £280m matched funding from 2013 to 2020.
International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: "Under-nutrition is stopping children and countries from reaching their full potential, accounting for the loss of billions of dollars in productivity.
"A strong and healthy workforce is vital if a country's economy is to prosper. This means business and science taking a lead in fighting for good nutrition because we understand that better nutrition is the smart way to tackle extreme poverty, child mortality and economic underachievement.
"The commitments secured today will help transform the life chances of millions of children and pregnant women by ensuring they get the right nutrition at the right time, securing greater long-term economic growth and prosperity for all."
Other attendees at the summit included Microsoft founder Bill Gates, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Unilever chief executive Paul Polman and Brazilian vice president Michel Temer.
Protesters believe the new deal will benefit big-business
The participants, who signed a Global Nutrition for Growth deal, committed their countries and organisations by 2020 to have improved the nutrition of 500 million pregnant women and young children; reduced the number of children under five who are stunted by an additional 20 million; and have saved the lives of at least 1.7 million children by preventing stunting, increasing breastfeeding and better treatment of severe and acute malnutrition.
Under-nutrition is a chronic lack of nutrients that can result in death, stunted growth and in a lower resistance to illnesses in later life.
It is the biggest underlying cause of death in under fives in the world and is responsible for 8,000 child deaths each day.
It stunts the growth of children, reducing their potential, undermining their adult earnings by up to 10%, and in some countries reducing the size of the economy by 11% as a result, experts said.
Campaigners against the new deal have said the government's money should not be going to large-multinational companies, and instead should for directed towards native, small-scale food producers in Africa.
Protests were held outside the London headquarters of Unilever, and attracted activists and campaigners from groups including War on Want, World Development Movement, Jubilee Debt Campaign, Friends of the Earth, the Gaia Foundation and the Landworkers’ Alliance.
Graciela Romero, from War on Want, said: “There is an alternative to the New Alliance and that is the food sovereignty framework which places the human right to food before corporate profits. Food is a right - not a commodity.”
Malouda signs off with classy statement despite being bunged in Chelsea's academy for a YEAR
Florent Malouda has put the way Chelsea treated him last season to one side and says he is proud of his achievements at the club.
The French winger is out of contract and free to join a new team this summer after being made to train with the academy players for an entire year.
His last appearance came in the Champions League final which Chelsea won in Germany against Bayern Munich.
The club, who tried to force him out last summer, were angry when he would not leave and banished him from the first-team squad.
But Malouda, 32, wrote on his website: 'It’s been a real pleasure and an honor to wear the blue shirt for 5 years.
'Coming from Lyon after four successful years with as many champion titles, it was a real challenge to sign for Chelsea FC with the ambition to succeed in the best league in the world: the English Premier League.
'One of the main reason why I decided to sign for this club was to win the European Champions League and I couldn’t imagine a better scenario than winning the best club trophy in the world for my last Chelsea game.
'Over the five years I’ve defended the club’s colors, I’ve really enjoyed the great moments I lived amongst players and technical staff with the aim to deserve the daily support from our loyal fans, and I always tried to make them proud.
'Every good thing must come to an end, and even if I had to wait for a whole season at the club’s academy, I’m very proud of all my achievements as a Chelsea player.
'I’m free now to carry on my career, so I wish all the best to all my blue friends; I’ll always support Chelsea FC.'
Woman Discovers Online ‘Friend’ Is Actually Ex-Husband
A divorced Minnesota woman discovered that the man she’d been communicating with online for roughly a year was actually her ex-husband, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The woman has since filed stalking charges.
Brian Matthew Cornelius, 36, allegedly created an “elaborate online persona” before communicating with his ex-wife. During the course of their online courtship, his ex-wife revealed many intimate details of her life, including her thoughts and feelings about her ex-husband, according to the Pioneer Press article.
The paper reports that prosecutors claim Cornelius observed his ex-wife’s home through a webcam. He also convinced her to “skip a court appearance in which she was seeking an order for protection against him.” The charge against her ex-husband was then dropped, the Pioneer Press reported.
Eventually the woman was able to figure out that “Aaron Carpenter” was actually Brian Cornelius. The Pioneer Press explains that Cornelius showed up at places where the woman had told Carpenter she would be.
The man known as Carpenter also said things to the woman that only her ex-husband could possibly know, according to the paper.
Confronted by his ex-wife, Cornelius allegedly admitted to using images he found online to fill out his alter-ego’s profile, according to the complaint cited in the Pioneer Press piece. The two were married for 11 years and have two children.
Cornelius faces two counts of gross misdemeanor stalking. He is scheduled to appear in court on the stalking charges next month.
