Sunnah of dressing and undressing

Assalamu ‘Alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu Oyebamire

Today we will learn about the sunnah of dressing and undressing.

  • It is Sunnah for a Muslim to start with the right when dressing, and to say, Bismillaah (In the name of Allaah). Saying tasmiyah will also protect your awrah from the sight of Shayateen. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah RA said: The Messenger of Allaah sallallahu alaihe wassallam said: “When you get dressed and when you do wudoo’, start on the right.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4141; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 787.

  • Use the Prophet’s supplication. When he put on a thawb, long shirt, upper garment or turban, he would say : "All praise is for Allah, Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me with no power or might from myself."
  • It is Sunnah for the one who is putting on a new garment to thank Allaah and make du’aa’.
  • Begin taking clothes off from the left side. (There is no specific evidence for this, but it seems that general evidences indicating to begin with the right (for things that are good) and the left for the opposite have been used. This was used in relation to putting on clothes, i.e to put them on starting with the right; therefore, when taking them off, begin with the left.
  • It is Sunnah to pay attention to keeping one's clothes clean, without feeling arrogant or exaggerating about that.
  • It is mustahabb to wear white clothes.
  • It is haram to wear garments of fame and vanity, which means a garment that stands out from others so that people will look at the wearer and he will become known for it.

'Abd-Allah Ibn 'Umar (RA) narrates that, 'Whoever wears clothing to be known (to be recognized), on the day of resurrection Allah (The Exalted) will make them wear the clothing of disrespect and then set on fire.'
Allahu Akbar!

Those who pay for designer clothing and waste money by paying for the name on a garment could be included in this. Do we want to wear the clothing of disrespect? Think of those people who are unfortunate, who do not have proper clothes and we want to pay so much on our clothing and feel proud? Remember the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihe wassallam wore simple clothing if he wanted he could have worn the most expensive thawb, but he chose to be simple.

Saalim ibn 'Abd-Allah (RA) narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihe wassallam said, 'A person once was dragging his clothing (on the floor) with pride. He was swollen up by the earth and he will continue to be swollen up until the day of judgement.'

May Allah (The Exalted) save us from showing off and being proud and give us the ability to be simple and follow the beautiful Sunnah, Ameen.

Wishing you the best,

Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu
