Train Crushes Car In Ibadan [Photo]

crushed car

A man, Mr Sola Ibitoye, narrowly escaped death on Saturday at Sango Railway Crossing in Ibadan, Oyo State, when his Renault car with registration number GF 821 KJA was crushed by a moving train at about 4.42p.m.
The passenger train, which a source at the scene of incident said was Ilorin-bound, dragged the car a few metres from the railway to the side of the rail line, rendering it a total write-off.
The driver and owner of the vehicle said that he wanted to make a u-turn at the rail line when the engine of his car went off.

He added that he tried to jumpstart the car but the railway was slippery so his attempts were unsuccessful.

Saying that he did not know that the train was close by until someone notified him, Mr Ibitoye stated that he tried to get passersby to help him push the car off the rail line but none of them was willing to help, except one person, whose efforts joined to his own could not take the car off the way.
Confirming the story, the District Public Relations Officer, Francis Unyimadu, said that the usual thing was for railway officials to stop vehicles five minutes to the arrival of the train, which was done by the official stationed at the Sango railway crossing.

He added that the driver of the affected vehicle tried to make a u-turn but stopped on the rail track in the process, while efforts to help him push the vehicle off proved abortive.
He stated further that the damage to the passenger train was not yet known as the train could not stop, adding that the Corporation’s engineer would assess the damage later.

He further warned motorists to obey instructions when asked to stop at the approach of train, saying that the train, because of its nature, has the right of way wherever there is a railway crossing.
The Divisional Crime Officer of Bodija Railway Police Station was at the scene of the accident, while it was noted that hoodlums, in the guise of sympathising with the car owner, had stolen the car battery as it could not be seen.

Did one of dead Asiana victims SURVIVE the crash only to be run over and killed by first responders?

Passengers fled the Asiana Airlines jetliner after it crash-landed. Authorities say one of the dead victims may have been hit after exiting the plane
One of the Chinese teenagers who was found dead in the Asiana Airlines wreckage may have actually survived the crash - only to be struck and killed by emergency responders scrambling to the crash site, it was revealed on Sunday.  Authorities say one of the two dead victims from the crash was found outside the plane and had apparently be hit by a fire truck or an ambulance. San Francisco's medical examiner is now conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of the girl's death, fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said. 'One of the deceased did have injuries consistent with those of having been run over by a vehicle,' Talmadge said. 'Many agencies were on the field yesterday.'
In the chaos of the crash-landing of Asiana Airlines Flight 214, dozens of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the scene to help recuse the jetliner's 291 passengers and battle the blaze the broke out on board. Witnesses reported seeing dozens of people running on the tarmac, attempting to escape the burning wreckage of the plane.  Asiana Airlines said the two dead were Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia, both 16 years old from Jiangshan in eastern China. They were both headed for a summer camp in the U.S. - part of a group of 70 Chinese students and teachers aboard the Boeing 777 that crash-landed.
A total of 141 Chinese nationals were aboard the flight that was bound for San Francisco from Seoul, South Korea.  Miss Wang's parents were both on the fight, as well, and could be seen sobbing as they learned their daughter died in the crash.
The black box aboard the Boeing 777 jetliner set out three crucial moments - beginning 7 seconds before impact - that show the plane was approaching the runway too slowly and that the pilots were trying to correct the problem.
National Transportation Safety Board officials said today that the jetliner, which was carrying 291 passengers, was flying 'significantly' slower than the 137 knots that is ideal for jetliners preparing to land in San Francisco. NTSB Chair Deborah Hersman said an initial examination of the plane's in-flight data recorders show no indication that the plane was in trouble until 7 seconds before impact.
It was at that point that the pilots tried to increase the speed of the plane. 'We have to take another look at the raw data and corroborate it with radar and air traffic information to make sure we have a very precise speed,' Hersman said. 'But again, we are not talking about a few knots here or there. We're talking about a significant amount of speed below 137.'
By all accounts, the plane was set to land normally - its landing gear was down and its flaps were set to the standard 30 degrees. Just 4 seconds before the plane crash-landed, a 'stick shaker' warning activated, notifying the pilots that the plane was about to stall. The 'stick shaker' literally shakes the control stick that the pilot is holding. It is meant to tell the pilot that the engines will stall if the aircraft maintains the current speed. Then, finally, 1.5seconds before impact, the voice recorders revealed that the pilots were planning to abort the landing.  The pilots - who have not been identified - announced a 'go-around' - an aborted landing in which the plane approaches the runway but instead of  touching down, it lifts off again and circles around to approach the runway again. The Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul, South Korea, which carried 61 Americans, broke apart and caught fire as it tumbled in cart-wheels on the runway shortly before noon on  Saturday. The crash killed two teenage Chinese students, one of whom was reportedly ejected from the plane when the tail section broke off. At least two people have been paralyses by their injuries. Some 185 passengers were hospitalized.
Hersman cautioned that the findings from the black box aboard the plane are the result of only a preliminary investigation of that in-flight data. Investigators have also not yet spoken to the captain and first officer who were flying the plane. They hope to interview the pilots in the coming days.
Hersman refused to speculate on whether the crash was a result of pilot error or a mechanical failure.  A study of the weather at the time reveals that there were no reports of wind shear or other adverse conditions at the time, according to the NTSB.

The pilots navigated the landing manually, but sight on the bright, sunny day, in part because the instrument landing system on the runway was inoperative.
The parents of Wang Linjia, center - one of the teenage students killed in Saturday's crash - mourn the los of their daughter at San Francisco International Airport
Numerous fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the scene of the crash as passengers fled. Firefighters say one of the Chinese students may have been hit and killed in the choas
A total of 307 people were on board the plane when it crash-landed. Most managed to walk away from the crash
Ms Hersman declined to say whether the crash was the result of pilot error or mechanical failure. She said the investigation remains ongoing

First photographs from inside wrecked San Francisco plane as black box reveals pilots

Devastation: The interior of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 that crashed at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco, California, is shown in this U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) handout photo released on July 7th, 2013
The first images from inside the stricken Asiana Airlines Flight 214 that crashed at San Francisco's airport on Saturday were released today by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board - as it emerged the pilot was on his maiden training flight and had only 43 hours experience at the controls of a Boeing 777. The chilling photographs of seats slammed out of their rivets and oxygen masks dangling from the overhead compartments give some indication of the terror that the 307 passengers and crew experienced as the plane's botched landing killed two and injured 181 people. This comes as the flight recorder or black box from the doomed aircraft revealed that the craft was 'significantly below' its intended speed and its crew tried to abort the landing less than two seconds before it hit a seawall, severing the tail section of the plane and almost flipping onto one side. 'He was training,' a spokeswoman for Asiana Airlines, Lee Hyomin, said to Reuters about pilot Lee Kang-Kook. 'Even a veteran gets training,' the airlines spokeswoman said. 'He has a lot of experience and previously had flown to San Francisco on different planes, including the B747 ... and was assisted by another pilot who has more experience with the 777.'
The pilots - announced a 'go-around' - an aborted landing in which the plane approaches the runway but instead of  touching down, it lifts off again and circles around to approach the runway again. Not once beforehand did any member of the flights crew radio the control tower for help. But in the aftermath of the deadly crash it has been revealed that the tower received one solitary message from the cockpit that said, 'Hello, hello. I have trouble.' '214 heavy, emergency vehicles are responding. Emergency vehicles are responding,' responded the tower according to NBC News.
'Okay, I cannot...' the pilot starts to say, before his voice becomes unintelligible.
This comes as dramatic amateur video footage that shows the terrifying moment that Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash-landed onto the runway at San Francisco airport has emerged as investigators revealed the pilots tried to abort the landing just 1.5 seconds before the fatal crash. Plane spotter Fred Hayes filmed the deadly crash on Saturday as the Boeing 777 came in for its doomed landing at the West Coast airport where it spun around before coming to a stop in a fiery cloud of dust and smoke.
Hayes had been filming planes taking off and landing about a mile away from the airport, when the Boeing 777 came in for its fatal landing. The footage, shown on CNN, comes the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the crew of the aircraft, which was flying in from Seoul in South Korea, had misjudged their approach about seven seconds before the crash and tried to correct it.
The footage, and a separate dramatic sequence of pictures, shows the entire crash, from the moment of impact, to when thick smoke started to pour out of the plane.
NTSB Chair Deborah Hersman, speaking at a news conference at the airport, said there were no indications of any problems with the plane or the landing until 7 seconds before impact, when the crew tried to increase the plane's speed. Hersman said data recorders show the plane was traveling 'significantly below' the planned speed. The stall warning sounded four seconds before impact, and the crew tried to abort the landing and initiate what's known as a 'go around' maneuver just 1.5 seconds before crashing, Hersman said.
'Air speed was significantly below the target airspeed,' said Hersman.
The crash killed two teenage Chinese students and injured more than 180 people, at least two dozen of them seriously, local officials said. Hersman said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash. The data recorders corroborated witness accounts and an amateur video, obtained by CNN, that indicated the plane came in too low, lifted its nose in an attempt to gain altitude, and then bounced along the tarmac after the rear of the aircraft hit a seawall at the approach to the runway.
In a tragic new twist, the San Francisco Fire Department said that one of the teenagers may have been run over by an emergency vehicle as first responders scrambled to the scene. 'One of the deceased did have injuries consistent with those of having been run over by a vehicle,' fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said. 'Many agencies were on the field yesterday.' Autopsies to determine the cause of death will be conducted by the San Mateo County coroner's office, officials said. Hersman said the aircraft’s stick shaker — a piece of safety equipment that warns pilots of an impending stall — went off moments before the crash. The normal response to a stall warning is to increase speed to recover control.
Asked whether the information reviewed by the NTSB showed pilot error in the crash, Hersman did not answer directly. 'What I will tell you is that the NTSB conducts very thorough investigations. We will not reach a determination of probable cause in the first few days that we're on an accident scene,' she told reporters.

Interior damage to the plane also was extreme, Hersman said on CNN earlier on Sunday. 'You can see the devastation from the outside of the aircraft, the burn-through, the damage to the external fuselage,' she said. 'But what you can't see is the damage internally. That is really striking.'
The NTSB released photos showing the wrecked interior cabin oxygen masks dangling from the ceiling. Six people remained in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital on Sunday, including one girl, a hospital spokeswoman said, and 13 others were in less serious condition. At least five people were still being treated at other area hospitals on Sunday morning. Some of the injured at San Francisco General suffered spinal fractures, including paralysis, and others sustained head trauma and abdominal injuries, according to Margaret Knudson, chief of surgery at the hospital. At least two patients also suffered 'severe road rash suggesting they were dragged,' Knudson said. The injured patients who were able to talk said they
According to Hersman, the landing appeared to be routine until the controller noticed the plane hit the sea wall. There were no prior calls for help before
'The speed was significantly below 174 knots, we’re not talking about a few knots,' she said. A preliminary investigation of the aircraft's recordings showed the flight was cleared for visual approach, which was confirmed by the crew. Preparations were then made for the approach and the landing gear went down. The target speed was given as 137 knots, but no anomalies or concerns were raised. FBI Special Agent in Charge David Johnson said on Saturday that 'at this point in time, there is no indication of terrorism.' Seven seconds before the impact, a member of the crew called for speed to be increased, a stick shift was heard taking place before a call for a 'go-around' was heard 1.5 seconds before the impact.  The call for a 'go-around' is used when a crew wants to abort a landing and try again.
Readings from the plane showed that the throttles were idle and air speed was slowed below the target airspeed. A few seconds before the impact the throttles were advanced a few seconds and the engines appeared to respond normally.
The plane was coming in from Seoul when witnesses said its tail appeared to hit the approach area of a runway that juts into San Francisco Bay. The impact knocked off the plane's tail and the aircraft appeared to bounce violently, scattering a trail of debris and spinning before coming to rest on the tarmac. Benjamin Levy, a 39-year-old venture capitalist from San Francisco who sat in a window seat near one of the wings, said the flight crew gave 'no indication whatsoever' that there was any problem with the landing moments before the aircraft struck the runway. Following the initial collision, 'we're going back up and I'm thinking maybe we're taking off again. We didn't and we went back pretty hard and bounced,' he told reporters after being released from San Francisco General.
'It's like a Six Flags show,' he said, referring to a theme park. 'We were skipping on the runway.' Joanne Hayes-White, the San Francisco Fire Department chief, said Sunday that it was 'nothing short of a miracle that we had 123 people walk away from this.' 'It was boom! The back end just hits and flies up into the air and everybody's head goes up to the ceiling. And then it just kind of drifts for a little bit, probably a good 300 yards, and then it tips over,' another passenger Elliott Stone told CNN. The plane nearly cartwheeled in the air, coming to rest in a burst of red smoke, witnesses said. All of a sudden about 300 people rushed for the exits.
'It was disbelief, screaming. It went really, really fast.' Levy said. Passengers threw open emergency exits. Stone, who had been sitting in the middle of the plane, escaped from the wreckage and waited nearby for help.
'Twenty minutes later, this lady just appears from like 500 yards away, just like crippled, just walking,' said Stone. 'We start running over and there's like another five bodies out like 500 yards away that nobody saw.'

Stone surmised that they might have been flight attendants who fell out when the plane's tail broke off on impact.

Tears As Ibadan Traders Receive Corpses Of 10 Colleagues Allegedly Murdered By Boko Haram

image

Scores of people wept in Ibadan on Tuesday as the corpses of ten Bodija Market traders arrived the city around 2.30 p.m.
The traders are believed to have been killed by members of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, at Moguno area of Borno State, when the traders went there to buy their products to be sold in Ibadan.
Colleagues, sympathizers and family members, who thronged to receive the corpses at Egbeda, Toll Gate of the town, wept profusely as they lamented the impact of the killings. This would not be the first time such an incident would happen. The traders had in May mourned some of their colleagues allegedly killed by the same sect members on May 5th. Stores were locked at the market on Monday to honour the slain colleagues.
Reacting to the report that 25 people were killed in the attack, a trader at the market, identified as Emiola, said he could neither confirm nor refute the claim, saying ‘what we know is that 10 of our people were killed, may be the 25 people version was true, we don’t know”.
Also, 32-year-old Taoheed Adewuyi, who said he was one of the survivors of the attack, attributed his escape to God’s mercy.“They stopped us along the way and asked us to come down from the car and lie down; they thereafter started shooting us one after the other. I was the third person. I was also shot but the bullet did not hit me well. I was almost gone. It was after an hour that I discovered that I was still alive,” he said.
He noted further that one of the victims was slaughtered by a member of the gang after discovering that he was still breathing after being shot.“I’m sure they were Boko Haram members”, he added.

How 5 UNILAG Students Got Involved In Fatal Accident, 3 Confirmed Dead (PHOTOS)

Oh no, this is so sad! I heard about the story this morning but I didn't blog it because the details were sketchy, now I have the full details of the accident - contrary to the reports going viral, not all of them died, 2 of them are still alive - the other three died on the spot!

They were involved in a very fatal car accident along international airport Road in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a close source who witnessed the incident, the students left from their off-campus, Emerald to be precise, for the engagement party of one of them (Iyabo)- she recently got engaged - and her friends/cousin decided to celebrate with her (photo above). The engagement party went on well, the fiance' went on his way and bade the ladies goodbye, his younger brother offered to drive the ladies back to school - but on their way back, they got hit by a trailer.
The driver - Iyabo's fiancee younger brother - died immediately while Funmi (who is dead now) was Iyabo's cousin. Until her death, Funmilayo Adelowotan was on a First Class CGPA of 4.71, she was fondly called ‘Miss Green’ by students and lecturers in her faculty. She was a 200Level student of Quantitative surveying(Faculty of Environmental Science)

Eniola Abiodun is also dead, she was in mass comm 400 level.

Temiloluwa Osindero & Iyabo (the lady who got engaged) are presently receiving treatment in LASUTH, may God heal them!

OAU Explains Controversy Over Undergraduate’s Baby

The Baby
The Baby

Authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, say a 400-level engineering student, Miss Oyinlola Rotimi, did not attempt to flush her newborn baby boy down the toilet at Moremi Hall on Wednesday.

Rotimi had caused commotion when she was seen in the toilet with the baby.
But a statement by the Head, Public Relations Unit, OAU, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, on Thursday, said Rotimi did not attempt to kill her baby, whom he said was rescued from the water closet of the toilet.

Olanrewaju said the father of the baby is a “400 level Student of Mechanical Engineering, OAU, Ile-Ife.”

He said an investigation into the incident showed that Rotimi had no intention to kill her baby, adding that she was inexperienced about labour.

The statement read, “The truth of the matter is that, there was a delivery of a baby boy by an inexperienced mother who, in her naivety, thought she was pressed by call of nature while she was actually in labour pains.

“Prior to the appearance of the baby, the young, inexperienced mother had discovered that she was bleeding and went to the toilet only to observe that something expelled into the water closet.
“It was at that juncture that she screamed and shouted for help when her friend, Miss Satope Oladayo, heard her voice and traced her to the toilet from their room. It was when Satope entered the toilet and found the baby that she (Satope) called an elderly cleaner for assistance because the two of them were novices in childbearing.

“As of now, Rotimi’s mother is with her and she has started breastfeeding her baby.
“Upon interaction, in the presence of the Matron, Mrs. M.G. Oyedele, Oyin stated that prior to the delivery, she was passing stool and had visited toilet several times but the last time she went around 7am, she could not describe how she was feeling.”

A mother is currently mourning the death of her nine-month-old baby who reportedly died after a three-storey building(Ile Baba Njeba) collapsed on Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Lagos State.

Three others including the baby’s parents were said to have sustained injuries when the building, located on 353 Agege Motor Road, Challenge Bus Stop, buckled at about 3pm on Tuesday.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, had said that the incident occurred during the rain. “The Divisional Police Officer, Mushin, received a distress call and mobilised his men to the scene. Four people were rescued, including a baby but on getting to the hospital, the baby gave up the ghost,” he said.
A police source also added:
“The building was built like ‘Face me I face you’ (single rooms apartment) behind a four-storey building in the same compound but the landlord added two floors which weakened its foundation.
“The building came crashing around 3pm and we all rushed there to rescue people. Three people were saved and have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, a baby of about nine months was found buried under the rubble.”

According to reports, the Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, told Punch news correspondent that rescue efforts had ended.
He said, “We received a distress call at our station at Isolo that there was a building collapse and we rushed down to the scene. Three people were rushed to hospital while a baby of about nine months was found dead.
“Rescue operations continued until no other person was found under the rubble.”

The Punch reports:
According to rescue officials, most of the occupants of the residential building were not at home when the incident occurred.
The building was said to have been built as a conventional apartment but two stories were added to it which weakened its foundation.
It was learnt that sympathisers were able to salvage some properties even before the arrival of the rescue officials.

The incident expectedly worsened the usual heavy traffic in the area.
It was learnt that state officials had sealed off and marked the building next to the collapsed one for demolition.

According to state officials at the scene, the building had earlier been identified as a distressed. He said that some of its occupants had vacated while some ignored the warning and stayed behind.
