LIONEL Messi overtook Diego Maradona’s goal tally for Argentina with a hat-trick in the 4-0 friendly win away to Guatemala.
The Barcelona superstar completed his third hat-trick for his country early in the second half.
Messi’s
goal total for Argentina now stands at 35, one more than Maradona. He
is now level with Hernan Crespo as the country’s second-highest scorer,
though Gabriel Batistuta remains way out in front with 56.
“That
was the least important thing,” Messi told TyC Sports when he was asked
about overtaking Maradona’s tally. “We wanted to play well in this
friendly. The team’s attitude was right.”
